Wais P was arrested this week, with police saying the rapper nicknamed “The Pimp” was living up to the moniker.
The 41-year-old, whose real name is Malcolm Byer, was arrested on Wednesday after appearing in Manhattan Supreme Court on drunk driving charges. This time, when Wais P was arrested authorities claimed he was running a prostitute ring, and had “advanced and profited from prostitution by managing, supervising, controlling, and owning.”
The arrest may not be a surprise to anyone who has listened to Wais P’s lyrics. He called his rap style “pimp hop” and often rapped about keeping a stable of prostitutes. The New York Daily News pulled lyrics from the 2010 song “You See It” that backed the point.
“I’ll have you turning more tricks, than Cirque du Soleil is, or Blue Man group, only difference is, you got to bring me back that loot.”
The rapper’s attorney, Theodore Goldbergh, said he is trying to find more information about the arrest.
“The indictment is very terse and does not have very much detail,” Mr. Goldbergh said. “I am just digesting everything and trying to get a handle on it.”
Police had obtained search warrants for the rapper’s New Jersey home as well as a storage locker in Englewood, New Jersey, and three cars he owned. They then followed Wais P to a scheduled court date in Manhattan and arrested him here.
Wais P was arrested as part of a larger sting targeting the sex trade in Manhattan. A joint operation between the Manhattan District Attorney’s office and the NYPD, dubbed “Bright Lights… Big City” has arrested three other people since December 2013.
As the Wall Street Journal reported, investigators have been trying to find larger patterns to prostitution arrests and take down the people responsible for pimping the women.
“In 2013, investigators with the New York Police Department and the Manhattan district attorney’s office began screening prostitution cases in Midtown Community Court, looking for evidence that could lead to larger sex-trafficking networks, officials said.
“Evidence obtained through court-authorized wiretaps and financial records revealed a loose network of pimps trafficking women in the area, authorities said, and led to the four indictments.
“Investigators were able to identify trafficking victims among those already arrested on prostitution charges and gather ‘intelligence about the most important targets: those who operate sex trafficking rings,’” said Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr.
After his arrest, Wais P was arraigned at Manhattan Supreme Court and is currently being held without bail.
