In a relatively brief time, Zavey has earned a reputation as being one of the most lyrical artists coming out of the new wave of Houston. Truly unique, Zavey utilizes a relaxed delivery that’s both bar heavy & attention getting at the same time. If you throw the typical hyperbole aside, Zavey at times can remind you of Devin the Dude, and then just as quickly bring a young AZ to mind.
His latest full length release, “Gems” finds Zavey at the top of his abilities. Production is mostly handled by his long time collaborators The Prodeuser, and fast rising production duo Stunt N Dozier. The tracklist is varied in subject matter, which helps to demonstrate how quickly Zavey is growing into a truly well rounded artist. The features are limited but Big Goony & D-Ray offer memorable turns. “Gems” also has appearances from C Dot Bush, Vic D, & One Hunnidt, as well as production from Mr. Lee & BC.
From the up tempo & melodic “Ain’t Called For” to the deeply introspective “Deadbeat”, a moving tribute to Zavey’s daughter, “Gems” paints a portrait of a versatile artist reaching his potential. Other standouts include “Downplay You” which finds Zavey ruminating on what label he should sign to, as well as his latest smoking anthem “Clouds”.
