Madlib has filed a lawsuit against his former manager, Eothen “Egon” Alapatt.
Alapatt, the former general manager of Stones Throw and founder of subsidiary label Now-Again Records, was “engaged in rank self-dealing, concealing information from and repeatedly breaching his duties to Madlib,” the suit claims.
Madlib also accused Alapatt of controlling the producer’s business ventures and finances while refusing to provide transparent accounting records, Variety reports. “A forensic accounting commissioned by Madlib revealed several accounting irregularities,” the suit continued. “As well as a lack of any backup documentation for, among other things, payments to Alapatt, codefendant Jeffrey Carlson and others as ‘consulting,’ ‘commissions,’ ‘fees’ or ‘reimbursements’ (totalling in the several hundred thousands of dollars).”
It follows a lawsuit opened against Alapatt by the widow of MF Doom, Jasmine Dumile Thompson, last October. Thompson argued that she held the right to 31 of the late rapper’s notebooks that are in Alapatt’s possession. Attorneys for Alapatt dismissed the claims as “baseless and libellous.”
Alapatt was general manager of Stones Throw from 2000 to 2011, during which time the beloved indie released a string of highly influential records by the likes of J Dilla, Aloe Bacc, D?M FunK and Georgia Anne Muldrow, as well as classic Madlib projects Quasimoto, Jaylib and Madvillain. He’s yet to respond to Madlib’s claims.
