If the semi-comedic raps of Lil B aren’t your cup of tea, Iamsu! is the Bay Area name you should be checking for. A triple-threat force, the HBK Gang frontman built a local buzz towards the end of 2011 by producing and rapping the hook on LoveRance’s 50 Cent-featuring hit, “Up!” (unfortunately, he was never given full credits, though). It was throughout 2012 when he landed on bigger radars, guesting on Bay Area legend E-40?s “Function” and stamping his trunk-rattling, Hyphy-indebted sound on a good portion of Wiz Khalifa’s Cabin Fever 2 mixtape with his Invasion production team. That’s coupled with two full-length projects of his own, Kilt and $uzy 6 $peed.
With his Million Dollar Afro collaboration with fellow West Coast upstart Problem fresh in stores, and an XXL Freshman nomination on his résumé, all signs point to this Cali kid having a strong 2013 — regardless of whether he makes XXL‘s Freshman cover. After his set at the SXSW Pandora stage, Mikey Fresh caught up IamSu! with for a quick chat on his come up, next mixtape, production, and more.
