“I have yet to put out a body of work where I am not in some way sharing and speaking to my personal circle of family. For most of my life, I have been blessed with a brother from chosen family, Shaka King, whom I have known since I was a kid. Shaka, in some way, has been a part of every release I’ve put out from producing beats on my first demo to helping me choose beats from Child Actor from which we created the CINE album.”
“Last year I watched my dear brother bury his mother, Judy Shepherd King who also had a pronounced impact on my life. Mrs Judy left her mark on this world in so many ways, as a mother, wife, teacher, playwright and author. At her memorial service Shaka shared a film to those who came to pay their respects called, “Judy Is Forever.”
Director and co-writer of the six time Academy Award nominated biopic, “Judas and the Black Messiah,” Shaka had this to say about the personal film shared at his mother’s memorial service:
“In the five years I watched my mother battle illness before her passing, I had to confront and contemplate her mortality in ways that I had no previous experience to fall back on. This journey with grief showed me that there was no direct line or black and white way to deal with it. Aside from the incredible sadness, I also experienced great joy and beauty. I feel like this film was a way for me to deal with that and I wanted to share that with others. Cav told me that he shared the film with friends who lost a parent and I realized that it was for everyone.”
I am honored to witness my brother demonstrate such grace while experiencing something so difficult and transformative. I would like to thank his father and entire family, our circle of close friends and of course Mrs. Judy for giving me a brother to walk this road with and for allowing us into this moment. Judy is forever.
