The California rap scene has been at the forefront of rap in the past few years and one to keep an eye out for is Bino Rideaux. The Los Angeles native is impacting with his newest effort Heavyweight Hype, a 7-track opus which showcases his skills lyrically and ear for hip-hop. Bino has drawn inspiration from artists such as Gucci Mane, Kanye West and Nas, a diverse pallet that doesn’t box him into the usual ‘West Coast’ sound.
Heavyweight Hype is the follow-up to his debut mixtape Life Like A Movie, released in November of 2015, spawning the single “100 Days, 100 Nights.” This project is a change of pace from what Bino was coming with his previous effort, switching things up to the more lyrical side and story telling. As you can tell by the cover, it was also inspired by old ’90s video games, including Mike Tyson’s PUNCH OUT!! to show who’s in the ring and on the come up on the West Coast.
Although Bino worked with the likes of Zaytoven, Cassius Jay, OG Parker and others for his previous project, he linked up with lesser known producers like P SOUL, SB95, and False Ego for his new effort. It also boasts a feature by Johnny Cinco.
Bino had this to say about the new project: “Just felt like showing that I’m the hip hop Mike Tyson and have a lot more to offer than just autotune. This could have been the soundtrack to a Spike Lee joint.“
