Aloe Blacc has written and performed the anthem “I Count On Me”, inspired by the true friendship between Dr. Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali) and Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen) as depicted in Universal Pictures, Participant Media and DreamWorks Pictures’ GREEN BOOK. Watch the music video here. “Throughout history, there have been many unsung heroes,” said Blacc in regards to the inspiration behind the song. “I didn’t know about Dr. Don Shirley, a classically trained African-American pianist, touring during the civil rights movement. Dr. Shirley was such a unique individual at such a difficult time in the history of America; wanting to tour across the country to perform specifically for white audiences in the South shows a lot of determination. A hero like Dr. Don Shirley wouldn’t have been recognized as during his time. I think it’s time now for us to stand up and applaud his tenacity and his genius. His story inspired my new song ‘I Count On Me’ which is all about focusing on your goals and shutting out the naysayers who tell you your dreams are not possible.”
