How much did Mobb Deep sell on their last album? Yeah Soundscan doesn't mean artists ain't doing good.
An insider from the industry did an analysis on the music business and said it is changing. There was $500 million in revenue from Itunes in 2005-06. And there is tens of millions being generated from Ringtones. Nobody buys albums anymore, they are downloading. Artists are banking outside of record sales so record sales don't mean shit anymore.

that doesn't mean they will cheap out on making on the album, they may not sell directly with album sales but they still have to produce albums in order for them to be able to make a demand to sell ringtones and pay for download and then promote for shows, pay for venues, pay for making of merchandise. the industry just has to exploit ever aspect now and not just focus on one thing.
