A WOMAN who was sexually abused, beaten and forced to eat rat and dog faeces while being held captive in a West Virginian home for at least a week may be the victim of a hate crime.
Six people arrested including a mother and son, and a mother and daughter, are white. The victim, a 23-year-old woman, is black.
The FBI plans to investigate whether racism played a part after one of the suspects, female Frankie Brewster, allegedly cut the victim's ankle with a knife while telling her she was a "zzzzzz", USA Today reported.
"The things that were done to this woman are just indescribable," Logan County Sergeant Sonya Porter said.
Anonymous tip
An anonymous tip led police to the woman who was found in Brewster's home in Big Creek, a coal mining town with high levels of unemployment. Brewster was allegedly sitting on the front verandah and told police she was alone before the victim limped towards the door, saying "help me", the Logan Country police department said.
Sgt Porter said that the woman was also allegedly sexually assaulted, stabbed four times in the leg, beaten, forced to drink from the toilet, chocked with a cable cord and doused with hot water.
Local police, who have requested the help of the FBI, are still trying to determine whether the victim knew her assailants and how she came to be at Brewster's home, USA Today reported.
Multiple charges
Brewster, 49, and her son Bobby R. Brewster, 24, have been charged with kidnapping, sexual assault and malicious wounding.
Karen Burton, 46, has been charged with malicious wounding and assault. Her daughter Alisha Burton, 23, and George A. Messer 27, have been charged with assault and battery.
Danny J. Combs, 20, has been charged with sexual assault and malicious wounding.
All six have been held in custody on $121,000 bail each.
