What works best for me is to EQ it.
Vocals typically are in the "mid-range"......so to cut out *MOST* of the beat you want to cut off the low end (where the bass and kicks are) and the very high end (where the hi-hats & snare are). From there.....you're just gonna have to tune it to your liking. You may have to increase the mid-range just a bit to get away from the highs and lows.....but don't go too crazy or it will sound like shit! You can't get away from the music entirely.....but if you tune it right you can cut out alot of it.
This is also how you can get a "telelphone" type effect for vocals.
