Mackens Semerzier off WEC 48 card due to injury, replacement search underway

An undisclosed injury has forced Mackens Semerzier off the WEC 48 preliminary card, and a search is underway for a replacement.

WEC officials today confirmed the plans with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com). Semerzier posted news of his injury on Facebook earlier today.

Semerzier (5-1 MMA, 1-1 WEC) was slated to fight Anthony Morrison (15-8 MMA, 0-1 WEC) at the upcoming WEC 48 event, which takes place April 24 at ARCO Arena in Sacramento, Calif. The night's main card airs on pay-per-view.

MMAjunkie.com first reported news of the the Semerzier vs. Morrison fight in March. It was one of the final additions to the night's 11-fight lineup.

Semerzier, who recently suffered the first loss of his career via unanimous decision to Deividas Taurosevicius in January, looked to rebound at WEC 48. Prior to that WEC 46 loss, Semerzier picked up one of 2009's biggest upsets after he tapped out Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace Wagnney Fabiano via triangle choke at WEC 43. It was the former U.S. Marine's fifth straight win via stoppage (four of which came via submission).

Morrison, meanwhile, kept busy after his June 2006 pro debut and posted a 15-7 record in organizations such as the Virginia-based Combat Sports Challenge, Shine Fights and Ring of Combat to earn a WEC contract. However, at WEC 46 in January, he suffered a submission loss to former champ Mike Brown in his promotional debut.

With fewer than three weeks until event night, the WEC could scrap the fight altogether if a suitable replacement can't be found. Morrison then would likely be shifted to a future card.
