TURLOCK -- ]

A man was arrested Monday in Turlock for allegedly trying to mail drugs or drug-related materials from a Staples store for the second time in two months, according to police.

Lt. Ron Reid said the package the man tried mailing on Monday contained a powder that was a precursor to methamphetamine production.

When he tried mailing the package, employees at the Staples on Countryside Drive recalled him as the same man who tried to mail 19.3 pounds of marijuana to an address in Lindenwold, N.J. in May, Reid said.

Two months ago, according to Reid, the man entered the Staples attempting to mail the marijuana via overnight delivery at a cost of about $200.

That, and other factors, made the employees suspicious. Reid said Staples has a policy to open suspicious packages, and did so when police arrived. When they did, they discovered the marijuana.

By that time, though, the man, who they say gave a false name and false address, had left. The Turlock Narcotics Enforcement Team traded information with law enforcement in New Jersey, but the investigation on both ends stalled - until Monday, when the man returned to Staples.

Employees contacted police, who pulled the man over minutes after he left in a car, Reid said.

Then man told police his name was Luis Flores, 20, although they have not been able to verify that. He was arrested on various charges tied to May’s attempt, and additional charges could follow from Monday’s attempt after the powder is tested, Reid said.
