ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- Burglars smashed through a window and a wall to break into a GameStop on University Boulevard and Goldenrod Road (see map) early Thursday morning. Investigators said it is the third time in 2008 that a GameStop has been buglarized in Orange County.
Deputies released surveillance video that caught the crooks in action. Detectives said the video shows that there was no doubt the burglars knew what they were doing.
The first thing they did was to shatter a window and enter the dry cleaners located next door. The robbers made their way to the back of the building where they cut a large hole into the wall, avoiding the metal doors that protected the front of the GameStop.
"Apparently somebody broke into the dry cleaners and cut a hole through the drywall to get into the back storage area of the GameStop," said Spike Hopkins of the Orange County Sheriff's Office.
The Robbers used a fire extinguisher to smoke out the storage room as well as to conceal their identities. One of the thieves grabbed the surveillance camera and pointed it towards the ceiling.
The pair took nearly one dozen PlayStation and Xbox computer systems worth nearly $400 each.
The store manager said he could not believe what the robbers would go through to get what they wanted.
"We do everything we can to protect our employees and protect our store, but there is not much you can do if people really want to get in, they will just get in," said manager Cris Shope.
The GameStop location on University and Goldenrod was also robbed in December 2007.
Managers of the dry cleaners said $200 of petty cash was missing.
