Was having this conversation with Mr. Typcee but I figured it might make a good conversation.

Actually I'm 25 right now and was considering going into the Navy since I scored a 92 on my ASVAB - and the Navy/Air Force is where all the good technical jobs are I hear. But all the good jobs in the Navy require a security clearance and unfortunately I won't get one because I was caught shoplifting when I was 18...so if I'm going to get a shitty job I'd rather be a marine with a rifle rather than a seaman with a mop, you know?

I'm not too concerned with college...my main reason for joining the marines is that I truly feel I don't have much of a place in a yuppie society. I've had a decent job in tech support and have worked in a corporate workplace before in marketing. It's unbelievably "phony." You've got to lie, cheat, cut throats to get ahead. It's almost impossible to love your fellow man and get ahead. I'd rather see the world, get into a situation where I don't have to deal with politics and just go out there and live a life on the edge and fuck it if I die.

Typcee you said you signed up to go back even after seeing what this society back home has to offer...it can't be all that bad, can it? I don't see the disadvantage to a person like me being in the military...I'll either end up in a shitty job or in jail back in this society.

Typcee - You said you were on security duty? 14 hours on and 10 off? Damn that's the type of shit I'm trying to get away from. They didn't give you shit to do but be on sentry for 14 hours?? One reason for me joining would be to actually get out and do shit all day...not fucking stand there.

Maybe I'm a lil' off, and correct me if I'm mistaken, but doesn't joining an infantry battalion in the Marines equate to the front line?

If I were you I would do reserves, then that way if you don't like the Corps you can only go one weekend a month. Then that way if you like the Marines then you can declare to go active.

Also if you have college credits you can climb in rank faster then those who don't.

My step-brother is in Baghdad right now, he went to boot camp a week after graduating high school. From there he went to White House Security detail. Now he is a Sergent and hes only 19. I know a bunch of people in the Army who are in Iraq or who were in Iraq. I also have a friend who is in Recon in the Marine Corps, hes lucky cause he didnt have to go to Iraq, yet he hates the Marine Corps and wishes he never went.

I would talk to Marines, other then the recruiters and see what they say about the Corps before you go to MEPS.

think it over dude. theres still tons of politics in the service, and there going to actually teach you to cut throats. if you want the navy, its still just as dangerous, but i cant see a shoplifting charge from 7, 8 yrs ago holding you back. a drug charge, yes. a murder charge, definitly. not some nickle and dime bs, but then again i chose to not enter the service period, so i would talk to a recruiter if i were you and as serious as you sound. just dont sign anything till your sure 100%

don't join the marines man, if you do youre going straight to iraq. marines really dont have a choice in orders and their mos ratings tend to be fucced up. if you go in the service go in the navy or air force dog straight up. id recommend going in the air force w/ a 92 on your asvab you can get a bangin ass job, that's real and you wont be doing shit. the air force is more about the service member/families as oppose to the rest of the branches which put military obligation first. you can get a good ass job in the navy w/ those asvab scores also. be smart man, i gotta lot respect for the marines but if you're going to join the military regardless of that "patroitic" shit people talk about your main purpose should be to benefit YOU. if a security clearance is what youre worried about shop lifting aint shit. i joined the navy and my record was fucced up, it had everything from car burgulary to drug charges, and everything in between, all kinds of stupid shit. i even caught a couple cases while in the military and i was still able to get a security clearance w/ out a problem. real shit. if you have any questions hit me up.

My MOS didn’t get fucked up and I haven’t gone straight to Iraq. Those are some generalizations, which aren’t very accurate.

The Marines are hardcore compared to the other branches. We are trained to kill. One of the main reason I joined the Marines are the intangibles you receive here. The Army, Air force or whatever can give you the lump sums of bonus cash and shit, but the intangibles you receive in the Marines will carry across into your civilian life. Such as the discipline which is instilled into your body! Don’t get me wrong there is nothing wrong with the other branches, to each is own.

Being in the Marines is like riding a roller coaster. One day you love it one day you hate it, but in the end if you take advantage of it will all pay off.

I would also say not to go into the reserves. I’ve seen a lot of Reserve Marines who have been on active duty for long ass periods of times. With the war the reserves is not the way to go, 2 year active duty stretches and shit. But you do get paid more while you are an activated reservist.

Talk to a recruiter from each branch and then make your decision.

You dont need to join the marines to get away from corporate yuppie life. http://www.bluecollarandproudofit.com/ One of the highest demands in America, and expected to continue to rise for at least another 20 years, is blue collar jobs....and they are paying very well. Peep the site, see if there is anything that interests you.

Thanks for the alternatives. I don't really want to become a killer for the Bush family..maybe the electrician's union will take me as an apprentice.

Seriously don't do it man. It's a surefire way to die. But if you ain't got shit to live for then you might as well go out in a blaze of glory. Except you can be a real hero and take out some of the corrupt American soldiers. You really would be dying for liberation.

If you are looking for direction in your life and a break from the ordinary the military is a great way to go. I have been in the army 3 years in April. I am in the reserves and i like it. I can go to college for free while i get my law degree and serve my country at the same time. Right now i am in Iraq working as a convoy security machine gunner. The war is way hyped up on CNN as well bro. Dont get me wrong, its no joke ive had a fair amount of fools try to kill me and my team. but its not like EVERY time you go out the wire someone is there setting off a bomb or shooting at you. if you have any other questions hit me up on the PM. out.
