I just bought a brand new copy of Lady Vengeance to complete the set, I think it is definitely the best made film of the bunch, technically speaking. I was wondering which movie did other people consider their favorite. I think I like the Sympathy the most.

If you're reading this thread and haven't seen any of the films in one of the best trilogy of movies made imo, you're fucking up.

Since my PC has aids I've recenty rewatched the trilogy in order and man, so fucking great. The way Park was able to tie in the themes, character archetypes, and general subject matter is really unmatched imo. I've seen them all ~5 times since I first saw Oldboy on Sundance Channel and I'd have to go with Sympathy as my favorite, and technically best. I think by the time Park got to Lady, he was running out of great scenes. I think while it's not a bad film by any means, next to the other two, it just seems to not live up to their watermark. Although, I give it a bit of lenience because it was a different approach to the theme, since it was at it's core an almost feel good movie lol. It also tied up a lot of things, gave others a new perspective. Just by casting certain actors again in new roles, he made it a good accompanying piece.

I realized I'm not sure if Oldboy should in any way be condemned for already having a good launching point being based on a manga, or celebrated for being one of the best adaptations out there. I think it's the latter for sure. It's a shame Park's films as of late haven't reached the same highs he did with the first 2/3s of the trilogy, but they're still good films and I'm going to keep checking out anything he releases.

likewise^

I've seen the first two starting with Oldboy which I think people know I didn't care much for, Sympathy however was very well made imo. I think the concept of Oldboy could of easily shitted on Sympathy but that movie was just too well made to be fucked with imo.

Lady vengeance was easily the 'best made movie' out of the three... however I'm not going to be so quick to choose a favorite out of the three until I watch them again. When I say 'best made movie' out of the three I mean that it was made more palatable to an american audience i think... it was a lot more 'feel good' i guess for material this heavy... well at least compared to Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Oldboy. honestly i just got done watching Lady Vengeance and the shit almost made me want to cry near the end, no homo. it was just an amazing job. but right now im also thinking about like i said how it was made more palatable for an american audience, meaning it was music heavy, kind of that american type of movie making where they use music to tell you how youre supposed to feel. you'll notice that right from the very get go of the movie, music in the background all the time to set the mood. a lot flashier use of the camera. also even though the movie started off kind of disjointed and made you pay attention very closely so you didnt get confused, it became very easy to follow after a certain point. no more twists and turns and heavy punches to the gut when you least expect it that leave you reeling and begging for it to not be really happening... there was a clear path from a certain point in the movie to the end. i mean you can just really tell that the director has his shit down at this point.. and the kind of raw feeling (especially in sympathy for mr. vengeance) just isnt quite there anymore. not that thats a bad thing.

i dont know, this is a toss up for me, i wont choose a favorite. sympathy for mr vengeance was the heaviest out of all of them, it just left a heaviness in your stomach and not necessarily a 'bad' feeling afterwards, but just an unpleasantness and deep reflection on the material. oldboy was amazing and even pretty epic in a lot of parts, and the twists and the turns and the guessing you went through throughout the movie, the heaviness of everything and how it all clashes together at the end and just blows you away.. wow. and lady vengeance, how the directors style is more fine tuned and the movie is more visually striking, heavier use of music and mood, and this amazing theme of redemption and the attachment you gain for the main character and how it ends leaving you feeling good, something you absolutely crave by the end of this trilogy, damn. and by that i mean honestly after sympathy for mr. vengeance and oldboy i was half convinced lady vengeance was going to end with the chicks house burning down and her daughter dieing in a goddamn fire lol... so i really welcomed that ending.

***SPOILERS******* lol
sorry, but fuck the poll for right now i cant choose a fave until i rewatch them again lol. im leaning towards lady vengeance though. sympathy for mr vengeance was just too fuckin boring the first 50 mins or so, and was just terrible shit after terrible shit and never let up with the negativity even at the end. theres no one to root for in that movie; and all sides lose. oldboy has the whole incest angle that is just fuckin ridiculous, especially when the guy chooses to be hypnotized at the end and will end up living out his life continuing to bang his daughter guilt free. and lady vengeance was 'mainstreamed' i guess if you want to call it that, but im not some hipster fag thats going to look past the greatness just cause "the director sold out" or changed the formula or whatever, lol.

well, for me personally, i saw Mr Vengeance first (my introduction to korean cinema) ..which i think may have contributed slightly to me holding it in such high regards. i get the impression that the majority of people see Oldboy first, despite it being the 2nd movie in the trilogy.

anyway, i found Sympathy at a pawn shop for $3, saw "from the director of Oldboy" (which i recognized) on the case, & decided to give it a shot. i watched the movie without even reading the description on the back, & found myself being surprised over & over again by it (& not just by its story). Oldboy has its shocking twists, but i think Sympathy is both simpler & more unusual in its plot. not to mention, i find the "protagonists" in Mr Vengeance to be more likeable. choi min sik's character is a bad ass, but the fact that he never came across to me as a "good" person limited how much i was able to care about his fate. both are great movies, but these are just some very basic reasons for why i prefer No Sympathy for Mr Vengeance...

this is all off of memory, of course. i need to sit down & watch the 3 movies again sometime soon.

Watch them again in order P @pimppimp , you'll notice things you missed the first time. For god's sake, watch them in korean if possible lol, that Oldboy dub irks me to no end.

after seeing them all several times and I gotta say Lady wasn't as great on multiple watches as the first 2. To me Sympathy holds up the best because it doesn't have the twist ending that Oldboy has, which you lose after the first viewing. Not to take anything away from the artistry of OB, it's just the only one that had anything to lose on multiple viewings. Sympathy I can watch over and over again and just take in the directing, the acting, cinematography etc and just enjoy it until the last scene.

so Oldboy isn't as good because it has an amazing twist and ending? that doesn't even make sense to me.

Lots of all time great films have crazy endings, that doesn't some how make them not as good because you know the ending if you watch it again.

Which movie holds up better on repeated watches isn't the deciding factor on which is better. I only brought that up since butcher said he couldn't even call it yet from just one viewing.

Really it just comes down to personal preference man, which is opinion based, so no one can really be right or wrong about it.

How ironic I just ordered the Vengeance Trilogy blu-ray on ebay and came upon this thread.

I'd go with Sympathy for Mr Vengeance being up there with Old Boy. Old Boy was the first movie I saw out of the three but I really enjoyed Mr Vengeance alot. I didn't really care for Lady Vengeance but I'll have to give it another viewing being that it's been years since I've last seen it. Overall I'd pick Old Boy being my favorite out of the three with Mr Vengeance being a really close contender.
