Jerome Kersey dies at 52

Thought this would've been up by now...sad news.

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Jerome Kersey, a fan favorite during his decade-plus career with the Portland Trail Blazers and a veteran of 17 NBA seasons, died Wednesday. He was 52.

The Trail Blazers confirmed that Kersey had died but didn't provide details. A team ambassador, Kersey appeared Tuesday with fellow former Blazers Terry Porter and Brian Grant at Madison High School in Portland in celebration of African American History Month.

"Today we lost an incredible person and one of the most beloved players to ever wear a Trail Blazers uniform," Blazers owner Paul Allen said in a statement. "My thoughts and condolences are with the Kersey family. He will be missed by all of us. It's a terrible loss."

Kersey, a 6-foot-7 small forward, was a starter on Portland's 1990 and 1992 NBA Finals teams. He was a second-round draft pick in 1984 and spent his first 11 seasons in Portland, playing alongside the likes of Hall of Famer Clyde Drexler, Kiki Vandeweghe and Porter. Kersey played for five other NBA teams, winning a championship with San Antonio in 1999. He retired from the NBA in 2001.

"It is so sad," Drexler told Comcast SportsNet Northwest upon hearing the news. "It is a huge loss for the Portland community. He was the greatest guy, the nicest friend, teammate and brother. He was loved by everyone. We will all miss him. He just cared so much. This is unbelievable."

At the time of his retirement, Kersey ranked second on the Blazers' all-time list in games played (831) and rebounds (5,078), and third in blocked shots (621) and steals (1,059). All told, he played in 1,153 NBA games for Portland, Golden State, the Lakers, Seattle, San Antonio and Milwaukee, averaging 10.3 points and 5.5 rebounds.

Others who posted their condolences included Kobe Bryant and Vince Carter.

Before his NBA career, Kersey was a two-time National Association of Basketball Coaches Division II All-American at Longwood College, where he was a four-year starter.

Kersey also coached in the NBA as an assistant with the Bucks under Porter in 2004-05. Early in his retirement he served as an assistant with the Blazers' summer league team. In addition to serving as a team ambassador, he also appeared on Blazers broadcasts for CSN Northwest.

Bill Schonely, who was the Blazers' play-by-play radio announcer for 28 seasons, told The Oregonian that he had run into Kersey earlier Wednesday morning at the team's offices.

"He just had a knee operation on Monday,'' Schonely told the paper. "He had told me he was going to have to be on crutches, so I gave him a hard time today and asked him, 'Where are the crutches?' He said his knee was a little sore, but he said he didn't need them.''

Kersey lived with his wife, Teri, in Lake Oswego, Oregon. He had four daughters.

"The news is so sudden, and we're sure more details will be forthcoming,'' Blazers president Chris McGowan said. "But it is indeed a sad day for our organization, the city of Portland and the NBA. Jerome will be remembered not only for his incredible contributions on the court, but his tremendous impact in our community.''

The Blazers franchise lost beloved Hall of Fame coach Dr. Jack Ramsay in 2014 and popular center Kevin Duckworth in 2008. Duckworth was 44 at the time of his death.

Sources: Thunder, Nets talk trade

The Brooklyn Nets and Oklahoma City Thunder are engaged in serious talks on a trade that could swap disgruntled point guard Reggie Jackson for center Brook Lopez, multiple sources told ESPN.com on Thursday.

The Nets and Thunder discussed a deal for Lopez last month that didn't include Jackson and fell apart. The sides re-engaged on talks late Wednesday, and Jackson, who has made it clear he'd like to be traded, was added to the talks, sources said.

There are contractual issues to be worked out as part of a such a trade. One would be the Nets getting an assurance that Jackson would be interested in signing an extension when he becomes a restricted free agent this summer. Another would be the Thunder perhaps requesting that Lopez pick up his $16.7 million player option for next season.

The Nets may attempt to expand the deal to include a trade reported by ESPN on Wednesday that would send veteran Kevin Garnett to Minnesota for power forward Thaddeus Young.

Other pieces and teams were involved in the potential deal, and the Nets have been calling other teams to attempt to reroute Thunder veteran center Kendrick Perkins. The Philadelphia 76ers, who have roughly $19 million in salary-cap space, are an option, sources said.

Sources: Arron Afflalo to Blazers

The Portland Trail Blazers acquired Arron Afflalo from the Denver Nuggets on Thursday in a package involving five players and a first-round draft pick, sources told ESPN.com.
.

The Blazers will send Thomas Robinson, Will Barton, Victor Claver and a lottery-protected 2016 first-round pick to the Nuggets for Afflalo and Alonzo Gee.

The Blazers, who have been on the hunt for bench help, get a veteran shooter in Afflalo, who has been a bit of a disappointment since the Nuggets traded for him last summer. He is averaging 14.5 points, but is having his worst shooting season in seven years. He has the option to become a free agent this summer.

The Nuggets' goal in the deal was to acquire another first-round pick after they picked up two in a deal for Timofey Mozgov.

Barton, Claver and Robinson are all part-time players who are all scheduled to be restricted free agents after the season.

Andre Miller heading to Kings

The Sacramento Kings acquired veteran Andre Miller and sent Ramon Sessions to the Washington Wizards in a swap of backup point guards, sources told ESPN.

Miller, who is in his 16th season, has a history with new Kings coach George Karl when the two were together with the Denver Nuggets. He has struggled this season, averaging career lows at 3.6 points and 2.8 assists per game.

Sessions also is having a poor season. He is averaging a career low in points at 5.4 per game and is shooting just 34 percent.

Yahoo! Sports first reported the trade.

Nuggets trade JaVale McGee to 76ers

As the Denver Nuggets continue to attempt to offload veterans and salary as part of a rebuilding project, they traded JaVale McGee to the Philadelphia 76ers, sources told ESPN.com.

The 76ers have enough salary-cap space to take on McGee, who has been plagued with injuries over the past two years and fallen out of Denver coach Brian Shaw's plans. Unloading McGee creates an $11.2 million trade exception for the Nuggets, who will also clear the $12 million McGee had coming to him next season from their books.

To do this deal, the 76ers will acquire the Oklahoma City Thunder's 2015 first-round pick, which the Nuggets got in an earlier trade for Timofey Mozgov. That pick is top-18 protected, and if it rolls to next year it would be lottery protected.

The Nuggets picked up another future first-round pick in a separate deal Thursday, sending Arron Afflalo to Portland.

Report: Bosh could miss remainder of season

Miami Heat power forward Chris Bosh, who spent Thursday night in a Miami hospital undergoing tests on his lungs, could be forced to miss the remainder of the regular season, according to a report by Joseph Goodman of the Miami Herald.

Bosh was reportedly admitted to hospital Thursday after complaining of pain in his side near his rib cage. Bosh and teammate Dwyane Wade attended Carnival celebrations in Haiti after All-Star Weekend, and Wade told reporters that the Bosh was not feeling well while on the Caribbean island.

"I don’t know if he was sick. I'm not a doctor. I just know he wasn't feeling good," Wade said.

Initial tests were inconclusive, Goodman reports, but the Heat could make an announcement Friday regarding Bosh's status.

The Heat, who added point guard Goran Dragic in arguably Thursday's biggest deal before the NBA Trade Deadline, have had little luck with health this season. Wade is expected to return to the lineup Friday in New York following a seven-game absence.

Bosh is the team's second-leading scorer and top rebounder.
