BEND, Ore. (AP) -- A Warm Springs tribal member has been arrested more a month after he allegedly fired gunshots at police officers, sparking a manhunt on the reservation.

Waylon Weaselhead, 21, was arrested Friday after an officer tried to pull a car over for speeding, Warm Springs police said. The driver stopped, let a man out and then sped off.

The officer pursuing the car recognized Weaselhead standing by the side of the road and took him into custody.

Weaselhead had a .45-caliber semiautomatic pistol on him, police said. He was arrested on a local warrant and charged with carrying a weapon while prohibited.

"I don't know why he did what he did, I honestly don't," said Lt. Dennis White III. "There is a sense of relief for the community and for the officers as well."

The search for Weaselhead and another man started May 20 after several shots were fired from an SUV that a police officer tried to stop.

One round struck the patrol car's front windshield, but the officer was not hurt.

The chase continued for several miles on a rough, dirt road until the men stopped the car and ran.

While fleeing, one man fired several shots at Warm Springs officers. One officer returned fire.

Officials from eight law enforcement agencies spent the next day searching an area of the Warm Springs Reservation near Kah-Nee-Ta High Desert Resort & Casino. Nine homes were evacuated during the search that turned up nothing.

Police quickly identified Weaselhead as a person of interest. Investigators are still looking for the second suspect; his name has not been released.
