(alleyinsider.com) -- Sony's (SNE) PS3 is dying on the shelves.

Alone among the three major videogame consoles, sales of the PS3 are down about 19% from November 2007, according to the latest stats from the NPD Group. Sony was only able to sell 378,000 PS3s this November, compared to 466,000 last year.

And the problem for Sony isn't the recession, it's the PS3. Microsoft (MSFT) put up respectable numbers with its Xbox 360, selling 836,000 units vs 777,000 in November 2007. And Nintendo's (NTDOY) Wii continues to dominate the market, more than doubling sales from 981,000 to 2.04 million.

So why is the PS3 flopping so badly?

1. It's the most expensive console on the market, $150 - $200 more than its rivals. Even if you believe the video game industry is "recession-proof" (it isn't), a tanking economy makes consumers more price-conscious.
2. The PS3's big bonus is its ability to double as a Blu-Ray player. Too bad no one seems to care about hi-def DVDs. The differences between Blu-Ray and DVD are hard to see on a TV less than 50".
3. The PS3 just doesn't have any must-have titles exclusive to the console. "LittleBigPlanet" has generated decent buzz but isn't a game-changer, and neither is Sony's new virtual world "Home."

There's really only one option left for Sony to remain in the game: deep price cuts, and not just for people with good credit. Tell yourself the PS3 has superior graphics if it makes you feel better, but a $400 console with a mediocre game library simply cannot compete against an Xbox 360 priced at $200 in this economy.

LOL, well that was the most retarded statement I've read all day. Funny how I notice the difference even on my bedroom TV which is only 32 inches.

I will agree on the backwards compatibility thing tho, that's one thing that really pisses me off about my ps3, and I was stupid enough to think it'd play my ps2 games just fine when I bought it. Oh well, I can still use it to play PS1 Dora the Explorer, which has brought me countless hours of enjoyment.

Well, this statement just all credibility with this statement. And people do care about Blu-Ray discs. The Dark Knight sold over 600,000 blu ray discs in one day. So obviously, people DO care. Also, I have a 40 inch and I cant watch a normal DVD anymore. If you really cant tell the differences, then go to the eye doctor, cause your eyes are retarded

yeah that part about not being able to tell the difference on a TV over 50 inch is bullshit. whoever wrote that article must still use RCA cables and have one of them 4:3 tv's with the rounded screen. I think Sonys downfall was trying to sneak blu ray players in.....although it did work, it made them lose this generations console wars with the high price of the PS3.

it was originally a high price but considering you get a blue ray player with it the price is right. people especially X-box owners want to talk shit about Playstation any way they can. the funniest thing is folks act like playstation 3 is just gonna die like dreamcast which will not be the case which i know hurts a lot of folks feelings. I will get a 360 also but am quite satisfied with a PS3 and mainly cuz my favorite game in history Socom came out pretty good after the initial problems

the ps3 is not a total loss to sony... they sank HD-DVD with it, now they get cash for every bluray disc that is produced you think they care that they lose money on every console when they make money from every disc they sell... for every game +movie in bluray= $$$

in one day dark knight sold like 600,000 discs (some correct me if im wrong)

i dont care bout this shit just saying i love my ps3, i upload all the movies i Download from iwillsearch and irfree and torrents and have tons of music plus i play games... the thing is my media hub for my tv. and cuz i have it i have the incentive to buy more bluray movies cuz honestly they look so much better... its fucking gorgeous....

the casual person dont really care about blu ray yet though, HD is not a common thing in households yet...and no "xbox owners" are talking shit here, the article right there gives you the numbers.

Im sure Sony can regroup and come up with something that can compete next generation, when blu ray drives are cheaper and if they secure some more exclusives. Also one of the reasons Microsoft has such a big lead is that the 360 came out a year before PS3 so we will see what happens.

in the future no company is going exclusive with a title unless its comes from the manufacture... just to much money goes into developing a game...

Damn, I don't have any of the new ones cuz I've been holding out on price drops and I seriously think I won't get the PS3. I wanted it above the others because I had the PS2 and I liked the titles and saw them going on to the PS3 for sequels, but shit GTA, MGS and DW, my 3 favorites at the time, are already on the 360. The only title I actually want that's only on the PS3 is God Of War and that's not even out yet. I won't get the Wii because it's just a gimmick. The whole controller set up is not my steez and the games all have to have a gimmick added to it just like the DS to make it fit the Wii. And looking at the prices right now I seen at Game Stop, a used 360 was about $160 with a wired controller and a used PS3 was fucking like $400 or somethin. 360 I'm guessin is the way for me to go this year.
