LOS ANGELES -- For years the poster child for the NBA's thrifty, the Clippers shocked the basketball establishment this week by retaining one of their own big-name free agents.

Now they are after someone else's.

On Saturday, after matching Miami's six-year, $82 million offer and keeping restricted free-agent power forward Elton Brand, the Clippers have made a six-year, $60 million offer to Golden State point guard Gilbert Arenas, the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday.

The Clippers' offer matches Washington's earlier offer for Arenas, a restricted free agent, but he has spoken openly of his desire to stay on the West Coast, giving the Clippers a significant edge.

According to the Times, the Clippers still expect to match Utah's $7-million-a-year offer to Corey Maggette and are hoping to extend Lamar Odom for a salary in that range. Los Angeles lost unrestricted free-agent center Michael Olowokandi to Minnesota earlier this week, and has indicated that it will not match Denver's offer to point guard Andre Miller, also a restricted free agent.

With or without Arenas, the Clippers are poised to get something they have never had: a stable nucleus, locked up with multi-year contracts. Finally, there may be some hope in the future for L.A.'s "other" team.

Gill is from LA too... It might be hard to turn down $10 mill a year to play for your home team... Gill has showed up to Pro Am games this summer in Frisco & he's been around the bay all summer, hopefully he is growing to like Norcal & will stay... the Clippers offer is damn hard to turn down tho....

we will see how bad the warriors wanna keep him now............but he isnt headed to LA anymore

straight from espn

Gilbert Arenas, who is the most coveted player left on the free-agent market, signed a six-year offer sheet with the Washington Wizards on Monday night believed to be in the $65 million range.

"He has signed the (Wizards') offer sheet," Dan Fegan, Arenas' agent, told ESPN.com.

Because Arenas is a restricted free agent, the Golden State Warriors have 15 days to match the offer. But the Warriors would have to move at least three players, without taking back any salary, to get far enough under the salary cap to match the Wizards' offer.

As a team over the cap, Golden State is helpless to counter any offer with a starting salary exceeding the league average of $4.9 million.

Washington and the Los Angeles Clippers pounced on the Warriors' limitations by making offers in the $60 million range, and Arenas was thought to be leaning toward signing with L.A. -- given his oft-stated preference for living on the West Coast.

I am pissed too. Just when they get some players that can play, they always bounce. All my high hopes for this upcoming season just went down the fuckin drain.

when he learns how to go to his left, and can take the ball to the hoop instead of throwin up those little 3 foot runners, then maybe jus maybe he'd deserve that six-year, maximum-salary extension they gave him in '01

^^^ never???????? You cant say never. You can argue they were a contender last year. they were close to the playoffs. Within 5 years they will be a playoff team.
