Man shot, killed in south Hayward

HAYWARD — Two men were shot, one fatally, early Monday in front of a residence on Cole Place in south Hayward, according to police.
The death is Hayward's fourth homicide this year. There were eight homicides in the city in 2008.
Numerous callers reported hearing gunshots at 12:44 a.m., and responding officers found two men suffering from bullet wounds. They were both taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, where Eduardo Elias Pereira, 27, died of his injuries. Pereira lived in Hayward, but not on the street where the shooting occurred.
No suspects have been identified, and police said the motive is unclear.
Lt. Christine Orrey said that while the investigation is in very early stages, it appears that the gunman approached the victims on foot and had some kind of argument with them just before the shooting.
Pereira and the second victim were apparently visiting acquaintances in the area, Orrey said.
She noted that it does not appear there was a robbery attempt before "numerous" shots were fired at the victims from a mid-sized handgun.
The gunman was described as Hispanic, of medium height and with a thin build. He wore a gray hooded sweatshirt.
Police said the second victim, whose identity was not released, remains at the hospital but is expected to survive.
Cole Place is a small street off Tennyson Road near Mission Boulevard, along the BART tracks.
