BROOKVILLE, Ind. --
Armed with deep-fryers, propane and 2,700 pounds of raw meat, fried chicken fanatics joined forces in southern Indiana to break the Guinness World Record for the largest serving of fried chicken, Cincinnati TV station WLWT reported.
At Indiana’s Canoefest, Brookville’s favorite deep-fried fowl tipped the scale at 1,654 pounds, unofficially beating the current Guinness record of 1,278 pounds and 11 ounces, held by a Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise in Kuwait City, Kuwait.
For Jerry Short, chairman of the Guinness Book of World Records attempt at Canoefest, it was time to bring the record to the “fried chicken capital of the universe.”
“Anywhere within a stone's throw right here you can get fried chicken,” he said. “We are the Mecca of chicken.”
Short said between 120 and 200 volunteers fried 2,700 pounds of donated chicken. The record-breaking poultry was served up in a donated canoe.
Whether or not Guinness approves the new record after the proper documentation and witness affidavits have been submitted, Short said the feat proves “KFC should have been IFC.”
“Of all things, Col. Sanders was born in Indiana,” he said. “He’s a Hoosier.”
