In a surprise move, the Oakland Raiders won the five-team battle for two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Sam Adams.

Adams signed a six-year deal Sunday night with the Raiders that will effectively be a one-year deal because of huge salaries in each of the final five years of the contract.

The Raiders' offer significantly topped the $1.5 million first-year payouts being offered by the Seahawks and Broncos. The Ravens had been talking about a $2.5 million signing bonus on a multi-year deal. The Bengals had been willing to pay a $3 million signing bonus on a four-year deal that didn't interest Adams.

Adams, 29, played six seasons for the Seahawks before being one of the key defensive players in the Ravens' Super Bowl run in 2000. At 340 pounds, Adams is one of the better run-stopping defensive tackles along with having the quick first steps to be a powerful inside pass-rusher. Adams had seven sacks in 1997 for the Seahawks.

After quietly being involved in talks for Adams, the Raiders had him fly to Napa, Calif., as they worked out the final details of the deal. He fills a void along the defensive line created by the loss of Grady Jackson to New Orleans in free agency and Darrell Russell's season-long drug suspension.

Adams was considered the best free agent available.
