R.I.P. to the late great Manny Steward. As a boxing fan, I had the privilege of watching this man do his greatest work in the ring as a trainer and later in life a boxing analyst. I remember watching the 1st Leonard vs. Hearns fight as a kid. I remember how mean Hearns looked, and I remember him wearing those Kronk gym shorts, and a young Manny Steward at the helm of the ship, and Hearns was his prized pitbull. Man I miss those days. the game just lost a legend, and he surely will be missed.

man, tough to see Tommy Hearns all chocked up like that.

“At this time, it’s kind of hard for me,” Hearns began, “I got up this morning and (wanted) to make Emanuel proud.”

Hearns paused. Then fell back a half-step, dropping his head. For several seconds, he tried to gather himself. Finally, a couple of friends raced to the podium to help prop him up.

And he continued.

“If it wasn’t for Emanuel Stewart, it would be very difficult for me to be the man I am today. He wasn’t just a trainer, he was like a dad to me. No one ever (taught) me nothing or showed me anything. Emanuel started showing me things and teaching me things, and right away, my life started to change.”
