Question about polyphony???????

Is polyphony data transmitted through midi, or is it contained and regulated to the tone generator itself?

I want to say the tone generator. Every sequencer i can think of is multiply polyphonic and at least 16 part multitimbral the only way you are gonna rob polyphony is if you are working inside of a Triton or something where alot of their layered sounds are made out of multiple patches. Lets see what the real experts say but i think i'm on the money on this one.
