The Cleveland Indians pitcher who started Wednesday night's game against the Royals was shot in the leg when someone fired at the team's bus shortly after it left Kauffman Stadium, police said.
Kyle Denney's injuries were not considered serious, police said. An Indians spokesman said a team trainer was able to pull the bullet out of Denney's right calf while the bus rumbled on to the airport.
Bart Swain, director of media relations for the Indians, said the shot was fired into the passenger side of one of two Indians buses while it was on a ramp between Interstates 435 and 70, and grazed outfielder Ryan Ludwick.
“It went through his pants and then hit Denney,” Swain said.
“At first, there was a little bit of panic. Once we realized Kyle was OK, fears were subsided.”
The team arrived at Kansas City International Airport before calling authorities at 11:15 p.m., police said. Swain said they waited because trainer Lonnie Soloff was able to dislodge the bullet.
