New Silkk Colone interview!

I had chance to chop it up with Silkk Colone for a quick interview. The MC out of South Central L.A speaks on everything from his latest drop: The "Process of Elimination" mixtape, to the old west vs. new west situation. We also speak on his upcoming street album "Prince of South Central" which will feature production from JR Rotem, Hi-Tek, Mr. Porter and more, as well as a "New West" Compilation album which will be dropping later this year.

*Interview by Young Cali.

What up Silkk let the fans who you are, and where your from?
-Watts H, double-O, D baby. It's the prince of South Central on the Westside. Silkk Calone aka the Belizian Gangsta.

Ok, now the name Silkk Calone, how'd you come up with that name?
-I got that name Silkk from high school. I figured it was gonna be some other people with that name. So I needed a last name, so I went for a mixture of Capone and Corleone. That equals Calone.

Coming up, what artist would you say where your biggest influence? Who did you look up to in the rap game?
-Kurupt was the first person that I was feeling and he influenced me to do what I do. But as the years passed and niggaz started changing and not staying consistent, I was more influenced by Fabolous.

What motivated you to start rapping and get into this rap game?
-It was just in me. I found that I had the skill at around 16 years old. And I just kept running into people that had something to do with music, as far as producers and managers.

And how long have you been in the rap game?
-Shit . . . I been making music since 2002. But as far as a buzz, I been buzzin' since 2006.

Your down with Larceny Ent. which also houses artist like Young Hooti and City Boy. How'd that situation come about?
-Through the MySpace. I met a lot niggaz through there. It was basically a real recognize real situation. I liked what they had going on with Young Hooti and wanted to be a part of that. I wouldn't wanna be managed by nobody else right now, we on a path to success.

Ok now you just dropped P.O.E. What was your mindset going into and recording that mixtape?
-I recorded most of P.O.E in 2 1/2 weeks for fun, it was a work out. To throw niggas some bullets, just in case they forgot from the 1st time. I was tired of seeing niggas that's so called signed to a label not dropping nothing even though they've been promoting for the longest. Niggas been saying they got signed for this and that much, and it's not even true! It's just a lot of bullshit that was gettin' on my nerves. Cause it's a different story if you really know what the truth is about someone, and that someone goes on camera or on record and say some way out of shit that everybody might be fooled by. But not the people who really know that someone.

Who's featured on P.O.E?
-My niggaz: City Boy (Compton, CA), B-Dot (Pacoima, CA), Philli (Inglewood, CA), Larceny The Specialist (New York, NY), and Ghozt (Florida).

Other than the P.O.E mixtape, what other projects have you been featured in or been a part of?
-I fuck with a couple Dj's. Like Dj Age, Dj Hustler, Dj Nik Bean, Dj 12 Gauge, Dj Clean, and whoever holla's at me on some real shit. Google a nigga name and see what pops up. Unlike these so-called rappers that say they "run L.A". Be sure to check out my 1st mixtape "By Way of South Central", hosted by Dj Nik Bean. I'm on YouTube, and the MySpace shit too. I meen, I'm out here bro, while the rest are fading away before they ever get a good shot at this.

Ok, you say while the rest are fading away. And you're right. We see a lot of "myspace/internet" rappers who drop a mixtape or two and then fade to black. What are you doing to make sure SILKK will be here in the long run?
-The difference with me, is that I'm ahead of the rest grindin'. I got songs for days that's done. I don't even have to make records for at least 2 years, and that's not including mixtapes. I'm talking about real original tracks, album cuts . . . that's why I'm not worried about nothing. I'm a songwriter, so creating songs is easy for me. It's like I'm in a can't lose situation. I just put the mixtape out because I need to build the buzz to drop the major label album. So I'm good, I got tracks, I could write, I can't lose right now. I assure you that when I get signed my album will drop within 3-4 months, cause it's done already. lol I can tell that the opposition is having trouble dropping shit cause their previous work was trash. They out there tryinna top trash. "By Way of South Central" is classic, "P.O.E" is the workout mixtape untill the "Prince of South Central" album drops.

And staying on the New West topic. Much has been made about New West artist feeling like the OG's of the West arn't doing enough to help and push New West artist. Whats your take on that?
-It's true but then again the OG's really aint ballin' nowadays from the looks of it. So what can an old nigga really help me with my nigga? They been in the game so long and they aint tryin'a put niggaz on so that says clearly that they not supporting they own. I wouldn't want the help anyway, I aint tryin'a stand on nobody's shadow.

What can the fans expect out of Larceny Ent in 09?
-Continue to go hard on and off the camera. Bigger plans for this year than before. I mean big plans homie. The "New West Compilation"should be dropping shortly, so look for that cause that's gonna set it off for a lot of things to come. Anybody who is somebody right now in the West will be on that compilation. That's just a sample though. I can't give you everything my nigga. So as we wait for the rest to burry themselves, we just making moves.

And what can we expect out of Silkk Calone in 09?
-I was laying low on the performances for a minute, but I'ma jump back out here and kill it again in that department. That "Prince of South Central" street album will be dropping in a couple months, along with that "City 2 Da Valley" with me and my nigga B-Dot outta Pacoima. Shoot some more videos, make some more niggaz mad, get some more money, and sit back and watch the suicide rate rise with these rappers out here.

Your street album "PRINCE OF SOUTH CENTRAL". Can you go into that project a little more?
-The "Prince of South Central" street album should drop close to the summer. I got original production from JR Rotem, Hi-Tek, Mr. Porter . . . features, I'm still trynna' figure out if I'mgonna have anyone on there at all. Maybe, maybe not, either way I'll be hot.

Alright thanx 4 your time Silkk. We look forward to the Prince of SC album and The New West Compilation. Is there anything else you want to say to the fans before we end this?
-Happy New Year. Too late to prepare for P.O.E cuz it already stared. Watch how long it take these so called niggaz that's signed on the west to drop something major, after all this promo here and there. Niggaz is only foolin' these fans. If they only knew how many of these niggaz is about to get dropped cuz they takin' up room. The industry aint playin' with these gay ass rules and regulations they got. Niggaz is gettin' played.
