This shit is pretty damn draconian. I'm all for trying to reduce PEDs in combat sports but 18 month suspension for first time weed offense is outrageous! Muscle relaxants too. What the hell are they thinking? It's not a PED. And that's what they should be concerned with here. Completely missed the damn point IMO. I don't want to see my favorite fighters miss 2 years of their careers for some weed. Steroids, good. Clean out the cheaters, that's fine. But understand there is a HUGE difference between PED's and weed! Why the fuck would there be harsher penalties for cannabis than diuretics?!? If you're using drugs to make a weight class that's a huge advantage.

By Edward Chaykovsky

The Nevada State Athletic Commission is taking a very big stand against illegal drug use by boxers and mixed martial arts competitors. Over the last few months, numbers fighters and MMA combatants have been popped for various forms of illegal drugs, mostly in connection with events which took place in Las Vegas. sleep aids? and wouldn't muscle relaxants be performance diminishing?

the weed one is hella stupid. they heightened the threshold after Nick Diaz's last (before this more recent) suspension, but it looks like they now lengthened the suspension term. I think their argument for weed is "it numbs you".

Well if that's their argument it's a pretty damn weak and unsupported claim. Fighting high isn't going to help you. Athletes do it to relax them or whatever when not playing/fighting.

But this is just Nevada so maybe guys like Diaz should just avoid fighting there at all costs.

basically. but these promotions also lose out. Vegas is the mecca of boxing, which subsequently made it the mecca of mma. a huge majority of Nick Diaz's UFC fights have been in Las Vegas, including his Pride fight. all 3 of his weed tests have come up in Las Vegas. 3 out of his last 4 fights (head liners) were in Vegas (his GSP fight was in Canada).

Nick Diaz is an extreme case though. most dudes getting popped for weed aint that big. but that's why UFC always puts Diaz in Vegas. shits funky.
