Blazers will reportedly meet with Hedo Turkoglu Thursday
Posted by Sean Meagher, OregonLive.com July 01, 2009 10:03AM
Categories: Free agency, NBA

As you've already read (and commented on), the Blazers (among others) reached out to free agent, and former Orlando Magic forward, Hedo Turkoglu around 12:00:01 a.m. ET Tuesday night.

And as of Wednesday morning Marc Stein of ESPN.com is reporting the Blazers are moving quickly in the courting process:

Portland Trail Blazers coach Nate McMillan is flying to Orlando to have a Wednesday night dinner with the Blazers' top free-agent target, Hedo Turkoglu.

Turkoglu's agent, Lon Babby, said Wednesday that Turkoglu will then travel to Oregon for a Thursday tour of the Blazers' facilities and meetings with Portland general manager Kevin Pritchard and assistant GM Tom Penn.

The Associated PressTurkoglu averaged 15.8 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.8 assists in 24 playoff games, shooting 42.7 percent rrom the field and 38.6 percent from three-point range.

Stein is also reporting the Detroit Pistons, who have the largest cap space available to sign free agents this summer, may focus their attention on former Milwaukee Buck Charlie Villanueva. And,

That has established Portland as the most determined Hedo suitor on the market.

Mike Bianchi of the Orlando Sentinel:

Come on, can we stop kidding ourselves? The chances of Turk re-signing with the Magic are about the same as Bernie Madoff getting elected banker for the Monopoly tournament during board-game night at the federal pen.

Let's face it, when Smith pulled off the trade for Vince Carter, Turk immediately became expendable.

First of all- we didn't "let him go" .... We offered him this deal 2 years in a row, and he rejected it. He left Chicago on his own, his contract was up and he didnt accept our offer.
Second of all- He is NOT a new up and comer, he's been in the league since 2004 and has been Chicago's leading scorer the last 4 years.

Trevor Ariza's short but sweet stay in Los Angeles might be coming to an end.

Ariza
Ariza

The 24-year-old swingman, who played a key role in the Lakers' run to their 15th NBA championship, is on the verge of leaving the club, sources close to the situation said on Wednesday.

With at least five teams pursuing Ariza, the Lakers are currently unwilling to pay him more than the $5.6 million mid-level exception.

"They're letting him go," one of the sources said.

Cleveland is making a hard push for Ariza, and the Cavaliers' coaching staff was speaking with him on Wednesday. While Cleveland can only offer the mid-level as well, Ariza's disappointment with the Lakers' stance has moved other suitors ahead of his current team.

The Rockets, Clippers, Raptors and Blazers are also showing interest in Ariza. Portland and Toronto could each offer more than the mid-level exception.

If the Lakers refuse to increase their offer, it's a clear indication that they are choosing their other big free agent forward, Lamar Odom, over the younger Ariza.

Ariza averaged 8.9 points and 4.3 rebounds in the regular season for the Lakers last season. He increased his scoring to 11.3 points and had 4.2 rebounds per game in the playoffs. He had 16 points and 15 points in the last two Lakers victories in the Finals.

Those numbers were a jump over his career averages of 6.9 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. Ariza has played for three teams in his five-year career.

Chris Broussard covers the NBA for ESPN The Magazine.

Report: Rockets GM meets with Lakers' Ariza

HOUSTON (AP) - With question marks surrounding three of their top players, the Rockets met with Trevor Ariza on Thursday in hopes of bringing the Los Angeles Lakers forward to Houston, The Associated Press has learned.

Rockets general manager Daryl Morey met with the free agent in Las Vegas, according to a person familiar with the situation who requested anonymity because the negotiations were ongoing.

Morey and David Lee, Ariza's agent, did not immediately return messages left by the AP. The meeting was first reported by KRIV-TV in Houston.

The 6-foot-8 Ariza averaged 8.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists for the Lakers last season, which ended with the NBA championship.

The Rockets could use a versatile forward with a perimeter touch, especially if free agent Ron Artest decides to play elsewhere. Houston star Tracy McGrady is already expected to miss much of next season as he recovers from a knee injury and center Yao Ming's foot injury could keep him out indefinitely.

Artest's agent, David Bauman, said in a phone interview that he's talked to Morey "eight or 10" times since free agency began early Wednesday, but the two sides have yet to discuss specific numbers or contract details.

"We knew this was going to be a deliberate negotiation," Bauman said.

Artest is looking to cash in after earning $7.4 million in a productive first season in Houston, where he averaged 17.1 points, 5.2 rebounds and shot 39.9 percent from 3-point range.

Bauman also said several teams who reached the postseason have contacted him about Artest. He said the volatile forward has exchanged text messages with "various superstars around the league, all from playoff-caliber teams, all 'Final 8' teams in the NBA."

Bauman would not specify which teams have contacted him and said that Artest had not had "face-to-face" contact with Cleveland star LeBron James.

The Cavaliers would be an intriguing possibility for Artest, since he played for Indiana when Cleveland coach Mike Brown was an assistant there and the two have maintained a good relationship. The Cavaliers have already added center Shaquille O'Neal in the most significant move of the offseason so far.

Ariza is the second free agent that Morey courted with a personal visit. He made an aggressive pitch to Magic backup center Marcin Gortat, showing up at his Orlando home with a Rockets jersey a minute after the free agency period officially began.
