You know the saying "The calm before the storm"? Well, that's what it felt like the weeks were prior to last week in the mixtape release world. We were given some one-offs, some pacifiers pre-album, and then some new jacks getting their fame weight up over the past few weeks/months. However, last week marked a tidal wave of mixtapes, mostly all unexpected. As the year draws closer to an end, we have a few more mixes in the pot to look forward to before our clocks reset for 2012.

Between Halloween and November 2nd of last week, over ten mixtapes dropped from names we've either known and loved in rap for a minute and others we are just getting to know better. Soulja Boy and Fat Joe leaked their mixtapes on the eve before Halloween, as Soulja's "Skate Boy" (peep the review) was supposed to be an album and then transformed into a mixtape (as releases often do these days). Skinny Joey Crack delivered "The Darkside Vol. II" and then after that, things got really interesting. Freddie Gibbs dropped the long-awaited "Cold Day In Hell" (peep the review). Jim Jones celebrated Halloween with "Vampire Life," as Nipsey Hu$$le kept running with "The Marathon Continues" (peep "The Marathon" ). Then the artist formerly known as Tity Boi (2Chainz) delivered "T.R.U. Realigion." While 2Chainz is far from new to rap, this new name has added a whole new dimension to his career. As far as real newbies are concerned, the $3million dollar holler known as A$AP Rocky dropped "Live.Love.A$AP" (peep the review). Rocky was well received A.S.A.P. In addition, Trey Songz dropped his double mixtape of rapping and singing, moments before Birdman and Mack Maine under the title "White Boyz" dropped "Billionaire Minds." Are you confused yet? Don't be.

This week brings two exciting mixtapes to the forefront. The first being Lloyd Banks' "Cold Corner 2." Banksy has been teasing with this release for a while now, ripping through tracks like "Love Shots" and "We F**kin" most recently. The G-Unit stalwart even made the mixtape cover an animated GIF of a crying Statue of Liberty in the midst of a snowstorm, so you know he's been putting in work from beginning to end. Meanwhile, Slim the Mobster has been creeping on the come up ever since rumors rumbled that he's Dr. Dre's newest favorite. Well, Slim sealed his fate as a song leaked called "Back Against The Wall" with Dr. Dre on it! The elusive Detox beatsmith/wordsmith jumped on a track for his new student. "War Music" arrives today and you can find that song on there.

Mid November looks promising with Fred the Godson's "City of God" coming November 14th. The next day Ludacris gets his Marty McFly on with “1.21 Gigawatts: Back To the First Time." On the 21st, Termanology and Ea$y Money call themselves S.T.R.E.E.T. and drop their own mixtape (check out the Lee Bannon produced "Compared To You" ). With Consequence just dropping the Estelle featured "Which Way 2 Go" it looks like "Curb Certified" will be arriving a whole lot sooner than "Movies On Demand 3" did. Stay tuned.
