blue mouse mic ($1,299.99 )

The amplifier consists of top-grade components such as polystyrene capacitors, metal film resistors, and hand-wound output transformers. The single-pattern capsule is hand built. Its rotating grille allows the Mouse to be positioned in the tightest of areas. The capsule is shockmounted in both the grille assembly and within the rotating grille armature to eliminate all outside low-end interference.

Neumann U87 ($2,555.99 )

This studio mic is equipped with a large dual-diaphragm capsule with three selectable directional patterns: omnidirectional, cardioid, and figure 8. A 10dB attenuation switch enables it to handle sound levels up to 127dB without distortion; and the low-frequency response can be reduced to compensate for proximity effect. Makes a great main mic for band recordings, works well as a spot mic for single instruments, and also makes a great vocal mic. Frequency range: 20Hz to 20kHz; impedance rated at 200 ohms.

shure SM48S-LC Mic ($74.99 )

Want to step up to the quality of a Shure vocal mic, but can't fit an SM58 into the budget? The SM48S-LC has a voice-contoured presence boost for that trademark Shure vocal sound, plus a unidirectional polar pattern to prevent feedback, cartridge shockmounting to suppress handling noise, and a pop filter to handle those 'p" peaks. An on/off switch makes the SM48S-LC particularly handy for solo and lounge gigs. Excellent for vocals, but also works well on many instruments.

AKG C4000B Stage & Studio Condenser Mic ($459.99 )

It's the only electret dual large-diaphragm transducer mic in the world, and a versatile, cost-efficient tool for high-quality recording. Based on the famous Solid Tube with a similar sound, it uses a transistorized impedance converter/pre-amp instead of a tube circuit. Its transformerless output stage ensures exceptionally accurate low-frequency response. Its affordable price makes it attractive mainly for small home and project studios. Its design provides three different polar patterns (omni, cardioid, and hypercardioid) selectable on the mic, making it suitable for many applications, even live sound. Features pre-attenuation pad switching and a bass-cut filter for suppressing low-frequency noise.

If your looking at the BLUE MOUSE spend $300 nore and go with this Brauner Phantom

This is a very transparent mic ( IE it translates well with many voice's ) has a big wide open almost 3-D type sound and is compared to his tube mic's which run $3000 plus. And this is just about the quietest mic on the damn earth.

Also other mic's to look @

1. Shure SM7 - this is a front address dynamic mic, but when you hear what it can do, especially with rap vocals all I gotta say is DAMM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think there out of production so you'll have to buy one used though.

is there anything better than a u87 (the sony c800?) on the market?
You have to realize there is no such thing as ONE perfect mic for all. Every voice reacts different to every mic ( plus remember the mic is only the first factor in the vocal chain ). While the 800G and U87 are great mic's and work well with alot of different sources, there not always the best for everyone, but they are two of the best all around vocal mics.
