Man Shot Dead at Funeral for His Cousin
LOS ANGELES, Apr. 28, 2007 (CNS) - A man was fatally shot when gunfire erupted during a funeral at a Jefferson Park-area church Saturday, and the gunman was at large, police said.
The shooting at Southern Missionary Baptist Church at 4678 W. Adams Blvd., where a man reportedly killed in a drive-by shooting was being remembered, started about 10:20 a.m.
"They got to screaming, 'Where the guns at?' and before anybody could clear out the way, somebody, a gunman, just got to shooting everybody," Avianca Hester told ABC7. "I saw about three people fall to the ground."
The victim, said to be a cousin of the man being buried, was shot three times in the chest and once in the head, she said. Witnesses said that friends took him to a hospital, where he was declared dead.
Saturday evening, Los Angeles police with the Media Relations Section were unable to confirm that anyone died. Officers at the Southwest Station were not answering telephones.
The shooting started outside, moved into the sanctuary, then shifted back outside, witnesses said. Larry Johnson said he first heard about 10 shots, followed by two other bursts.
The gunfire erupted about the time mourners started viewing the body, ABC7 reported.
According to broadcast reports, police have a good idea of who the shooter is.
