We're a CLEC. Meaning besides offering standard ADSL1 over AT&T's copper telephone lines (plain ol' vanilla DSL), we also have our own equipment throughout most of the Bay Area (soon to be ALL the Bay Area CO's) that run on dry loops (no dialtone needed nor phone service). Meaning AT&T has no control over what we do. ADSL2+ is entirely our product. Even on ADSL1 (the standard being up to 6mbps that runs on a phone line) there is no throttling either by us or AT&T.
There is no throttling of bandwidth PERIOD by us. That's called "traffic shaping" and is basically a 4 letter word at our company. I'm daily in contact with our NOC and SOC so it's not like I don't know what I'm talking about.

On a side note we've launched our first test market for fiber up here in the North Bay. Fiber is the future bar none.

To add more to the subject, we're not a "smaller ISP". We have over 50,000 customers throughout California and since WE actually resell circuits to smaller ISPs, we reach beyond that. However that is just the standard ADSL1 product.

But make no mistake that DSL speeds are more reliable than cable because there's no "boost" involved, nor are you sharing bandwidth with other people on the node you receive the cable connection through. It's a Designated/Digital Subscriber Line meaning all of your bandwidth belongs to you. If your neighbor is some torrent leeching WoW player it doesn't affect you in the slightest.

AT&T's U-Verse service is something called FTTC (aka fiber to the curb). It's a fiber buildout that goes to a part of your neighborhood, then it's regular copper to your residence. They take away your POTS line (plain old telephone service) and replace it with digital. While they advertise speeds of "up to" 24mbps, keep in mind this is also distance based and your bandwidth is being shared by your TV and phone besides the internet service. So if you have HD TV going in one or more rooms, you won't be reaching anywhere near 24mbps when using the internet connection.
As with Comcast, if you choose to get internet ONLY with them the price is alot more than if you get a package deal.
The main downside to alot of these package deals is if let's say your internet goes down, so does your TV AND your phone.
If you use a cell as yer main phone then no worry on that part but still the intarwebz/TV are tied into the same connection.

long story short,...i cancelled comcast cuz i was being booked cuz i was supposibly on an offer and it expired in november of 09 and i was getting charged $30 for basic fucking cable,when to begin with all i wanted was internet but the sales people that come to ur door and hook you up said i needed atleast basic cable to run internet and it would only be 10 bucks more..they never said it was a promo and yea,...i got booked,...i called and finally after all the b.s,got fed up and cancelled at $172!,..when i noticed i called and i was like "fuck,u guys are getting overs on me and kinna ripping me off!"..so then i re-adjusted my account and they gave me internet for 38.99(it was originally internet $42/year,with $10 for basic cable!),..so they talk me into staying and so now i got a box and they threw in hbo free for 3 months!...but after a few weeks i wasnt feeling that shit and so i called to cancel the cable ,cuz i found out i didnt need cable to run internet,and they said now ,that yes ,i can just have comcast internet,but it was gonna be $75/month and they were gonna pro rate me for the 2 weeks i used the box!!!!....i was like w t f?...so i cancelled!..april 27th!....theennnnn,..in my mind,it was $172,but cuz i didnt take the equipment back(which they said they would pick up when they come to disconnect me from the pole)....they say that i owe them 290 or some shit,.i was like "hella naw,..u guys said u would pick it up when i got disconnected"...the supervisor says(talked to him on may 16)"oh naw,we dont do that"..i was liek "oh no?..then why wuz there a business card on my door saying u guys were here for ur shit? i been waiting for u guys to come back and get it,..if u say u guys dont do that, then wut other reason would their have been to come to my door and leave a card?..he stayed quit,..i was like RIIGHTT?!..i was like why did i keep getting charged for cable service if i cancelled in april?!...he started acting stupid,SO I JUST TOLD HIM HE WAS ACTING LIKE A BITCH AND FUCK HIM AND COMCAST AND KARMAS A BITCH!....so after that,..not even,barely a month later,i get a bill from collections saying now i only owe them $202!,lol..????....so basically cuz they lagged to come get they're shit (from april 27-may 16),i own them over 30 more bucks!....so yea fuckkk comcastt!...

i downgraded and the price was pretty much just a couple bucks less. i also have netflix so that makes up for it. hulu plus gives u abc, fox, nbc. viacom has ALL their shows online. mtv vh1 nick nick r comedy central cmt etc. mlb tv is available online or ps3. im waiting for espn to be on the xbox.

I have basic HD and internet from Comcast and pay $19.99 for internet and $39.99 for cable. Every time my promo is over I simply call them and say "I noticed my bill was going up next month, do you have any promos?" and it's been no hassle to get a deal. It'll switch up between $19.99-$33 for internet and $29.99-$39.99 for HD service, but always a good deal.
I never have any down time and get amazing internet speeds.
Regularly upload at 300-500kbps and download at 1mbps.

Comcast is a scandalous co.. I used to do sales for them & they still owe me some $. If you work for them & fuck up their money, then they'll most likely fire you on the spot. If you work for them & fuck up somebody else's money, then they most likely will not fire you. I sold a package to my pop's & had to cancel the order due to someone else trying to steal my sale, then I finally got to sell him a 2 bundle package after a gang of trouble. He's about to switch if they don't give him a deal & they're not obligated to, but they are if that's their word.
