Exclusive: James Toney signs multi-fight deal with UFC

Posted by Cory Brady on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at 3:58 pm· 3 Comments

After months of speculation following James Toney making his intentions to fight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship public, one of the greatest boxers of our time is now set to embark on his career in mixed martial arts.

FiveOuncesofPain.com has been informed through sources close to the situation that James Toney has recently been signed to a multi-fight contract with the UFC.

Toney was seen during UFC 108 while attempting to track down UFC President Dana White in hopes of negotiating terms for the boxer to enter the UFC, although more recent comments from Toney made it appear as though the deal, if any, was dead in the water before today.

“Lights Out” is a former professional middleweight, super-middleweight, and cruiserweight boxing champion, while currently being listed as the active NABO and IBA heavyweight title holder.

Toney’s decorated professional boxing record currently stands at 72 victories and only 6 defeats, with 3 draws and 2 no-contests. James has stopped 44 of his 72 victims via knockout for an impressive 61% knockout ratio.

There is no news currently available as to when Toney will be making his debut for the promotion. Stay tuned to 5 Oz. as we keep you up to date on this developing story.

I don't see many other MMA websites reporting it, but 5ounces of pain is usually legit. Excited to see what Toney can do in MMA. Hopefully we get to see his patented "side check kick".

sicc! toney is going to destroy whoever the ufc puts in front of him.
anyone that decides to fight him standing upright. What happens when he goes to the ground? James Toney is old man, he's a shot fighter.

lol james toney straight up talked his ass into a contract with UFC, that's amazing. He straight up called dana white a faggot and now he's got a contract.

He just hustled UFC bigtime, he has no MMA skills whatsoever and he's pretty much done in boxing! haha, he's probably laughing his ass off.

I guess we'll never see Toney vs Vitali Klitschko now. There was talk just a few days ago that Klit was seriously considering Toney cuz he's got no one else to fight, other than David Haye who is scheduled to fight Ruiz for the time being.

James Toney is working with Rampage's old coach.

James Toney’s transition to mixed martial arts has begun.

Juanito Ibarra, the former trainer of Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, told Sherdog.com Wednesday that he has been working with the 41-year-old MMA novice on the fundamentals he will need to add to his repertoire if he hopes to be successful in the UFC.

“We have been working on stretching, sprawling and movement, all the things he will need to get a handle on,” Ibarra said.

Toney has amassed an impressive 72-6-3 record as a professional boxer, picking up championships in six different weight classes over his 21-plus years in boxing.

Ibarra said he wasn’t sure about an opponent or a date for Toney’s first bout. The trainer said he hopes Toney would be matched up with Kimbo Slice, noting that Toney should be given an opportunity to “get his feet under him” in the UFC.

^^I would certainly say he's one of the greatest boxers of our time, definitely.

Bernard Hopkins, Roy Jones, James Toney, Mayweather, Oscar de la hoya. That's the top of the 90's right there for the most part.

From about 1991/1992, all the way to about 2003, he had an awesome career.

Toney is a HOF fighter, without a doubt, and I agree one of the greatest of our generation...most definitely one of the most natural boxing talents in the sport's history. Lack of discipline was somewhat of his downfall.

As for signing with the UFC, I think its a total freak show move, similar to the Kimbo Slice signing to TUF, but we all know that the move to sign Kimbo, though controversial...paid dividends for them.

I doubt this one does. Toney is a washed up fighter, and the only entertaining fight I could see him fighting in the UFC is a fight against Kimbo...

Oh well. Let the freak show continue.

Also, Steve Cofield and Kevin Iole both confirmed with Dana White. Its legit.

Well, I think he'll box again because that IBA strap he has is a very prestigious title, and to vacate that would be a disaster. LMAO!

Kimbo would shoot on him first chance he got, he's not an idiot lol. He did the same thing against Mercer.
Someone like Cro Cop or Pat Barry would be good since they probably wouldn't bother taking it to the ground and their kicks would somewhat even up the standup.
