Club Mardi Gras. The Hurricane. Embassy. These are just a couple places where Slam Jamz signees, Heet Mob (a crew currently at least ten members deep), have hosted their training grounds of sorts for local mic fiends. A lot of local rap titans have earned their stripes at these various open mics over the years. When they began doing Club Mardi Gras (many moons ago), Tech N9ne was the only rapper I’d heard of from Kansas City. But at their most recent residency a couple of years ago at Embassy on Main, I had the privalege of seeing former Demencha-featured artists like Young Fierce, AMNEZIA, and a ton of other talented rappers, poets, saxaphone players and comedians do their thing impromptu. Heet Mob have seen people come and go throughout their tenure as “The Wu-Tang of the Midwest”, so when you arrive at Retro Downtown next Wednesday for the kick off of their newest open mic night, show respect where it’s due…and try to do something like this:
