According to Giants vice president of communications Staci Slaughter the incident occurred around the bottom of the eighth inning, well before the Giants celebrated their 8-3 victory.
Slaughter said eyewitnesses saw a man estimated to be in his 20s drop a personal item, possibly a pair of glasses, off the 24-foot-high arcade seating section and down to the portwalk below, which is a walkway adjacent to McCovey Cove.
"What eyewitnesses are telling us, and we're still investigating it along with the SFPD, is that he dropped something and he tried to climb down the outside wall to retrieve it, a light post or something, and he slipped and fell," said Slaughter.
Slaughter believed the man was pronounced dead at the scene. It is the first accidental death in the four-year history of the ballpark.
