The Fresno county sheriff's office is launching an internal affairs investigation to determine if an inmate in the county jail used telephones to record a violent rap album.
The album's explicit lyrics repeatedly threaten violent acts against Fresno police Chief Jerry Dyer and his family.
Authorities still don't know how the inmate made the album public.
His name is rosendo Lopez, a.k.a. "chendo" or "chenz" Lopez. He’s the man who was arrested in March after a high profile chase, during which he stole a deputy's patrol car.
Lopez has been locked up since then, but has managed to somehow release an explicit rap album that is now on the streets.
A long list of current or former Fresno county jail inmates appear on Lopez' new cd. All of the recordings feature explicit lyrics recorded over a telephone line.
The disc is titled 'Still a Boss'.
A source close to the Fresno police department says it's a reference to the fact that Lopez continues to call the shots for his gang even though he is in jail.
Many of his lyrics fixate on Fresno police Chief Jerry Dyer.
Lopez threatens to use his "hidden soldiers" to kill Dyer and members of his family.
Chief Dyer says he won't be intimidated. "If this was an attempt to instill fear or get us to let up on the bulldog gang, he's sadly mistaken," Dyer said.
The sheriff's department is launching an internal affairs investigation to determine if Lopez used jail pay phones to make his recordings.
Also under scrutiny are photos on the album's cover, which appear to show Lopez in jail - where personal cameras are strictly forbidden.
The source close to the police department claims the recordings and pictures would have been very difficult to make without correctional officers finding out.
The sheriff's department says it takes these allegations seriously, and is conducting a review of inmate phone records.
Chief Dyer says his gang enforcement team is studying the cd to determine if any of the threats rise to a criminal level. If so, Lopez could face additional criminal charges.
