Sheriff's Office: Gilroy furniture store was convincing front for large marijuana grow - San Jose Mercury News












Phuc Nguyen, 39, on Jan. 22, 2015 was arrested and booked into Santa Clara County main jail on charges of theft of utilities and illegal cultivation of marijuana for sales after a raid found a Gilroy furniture store was really a front for a marijuana growing operation


At 'Gilroy Furniture & More," it turns out only the second offering was true.

The downtown storefront on Monterey Road was never an operating business but rather a well-disguised indoor marijuana grow housing with more than 1,000 pot plants valued at upward of $2 million, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office.

The agency's Marijuana Enforcement Team raided the building in the 7500 of Monterey Road on Thursday following an investigation with Gilroy police. They soon found out that despite window signs reading "All Display Inventory Must Sell" and "No Reasonable Offer Refuse (sic)," the store was never open to customers

Furniture visible from the street was literal window dressing, investigators said, concealing a huge back room packed wall-to-wall with pot plants, with overhead air ducts and heating lamps. Police also recovered 50 pounds of processed marijuana, and determined that the electric meter had been bypassed to the tune of $80,000 worth of stolen electricity from PG&E.

Gilroy resident, Phuc Nguyen, 39, was arrested in connection with the grow, the Sheriff's Office said. He was booked into the Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of illegal cultivation of marijuana for sales and theft of utilities and is being held on $200,000 bail.

The raid was preceded by an earlier grow-house bust on Tomkins Court in Gilroy that yielded 300 plants and 25 pounds of processed marijuana, Sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Kurtis Stenderup said.

Community tips led to that location, and evidence gathered there led to the furniture store. Stenderup stressed that his agency does not investigate medicinal marijuana possession that is in line with California law.

I always wonder about all the furniture stores you see in the bay area.

Every big street in every city has at least a few, and they're always "Liquidating" or "Everything Must Go!" always having grand openings, and reopenings, or having a final sale before they "close for good". But there's always the same couch, vase, ceramic dog, and potted plant in the window. I've been saying it for years, they're all a front for something.

those stores have like 5 "liquidations" before finally closing up shop. while in business they might have 5 customers a day. i dont never see anybody buying from furniture stores in tucson. circus furniture is always having 70% off "liquidations". they got drug dealing or gambling goin on in the back

Lmfwao. The rent to own furniture shop that is literally across the street from me got busted for running coke and weed. Same thing, they always had tons of traffic but the same shitty inventory. I was friends with a few workers and managers there and knew weird stuff was going on but not to the extent that it was. Feds came and arrested the main guy.

I've been saying it for years but theres something up with Archie comics. Almost every grocery store has them up by the front and like multiple ones about Archie and his friends but have you ever seen anyone buy one or know anyone that reads Archie? It's a fucking scam of some sort. They might have everyone else tricked but not me.
