Edwin Valero Arrested on Alleged Assault Charges
By Mark Vester

According to multiple reports in Venezuela, undefeated Edwin Valero was arrested for allegedly assaulting his wife. Valero's wife was taken to a hospital in Los Andes. The doctor's report listed several injuries, including a collapsed lung and multiple bruises. Several doctors spoke with the press and said Valero showed up to the emergency room in a very hostile mood and was threatening staff members.

This is not the first time Valero has been in trouble. Last year he was wanted by authorities in Venezuela after allegedly having a physical confrontation with his mother and sister. The charges were later dropped. He was arrested last year in Texas and was charged with driving under the influence, which is currently preventing him from entering the country.

Edwin Valero: More Details Surface on Arrest, Allegations

By Jhonny Gonzalez

More details have surfaced concerning the arrest of unbeaten Edwin Valero (27-0, 27KOs) on alleged assault charges. It was previously reported on BoxingScene.com that Valero was arrested in Venezuela for allegedly assaulting his wife. Valero was taken into custody on Thursday morning as he visited his wife at the University Hospital of Los Andes in Mérida.

Per the medical reports, Valero's wife was listed as having multiple bruises, scratches and collapsed lung from a blow to the ribs.Valero was taken into custody by the CICPC (The Body of Scientific, Penal and Criminal Investigations). At the present, there have been no charges pressed by Valero's wife and she is not giving any statements. The complaint filed against Valero is stemming from the incident with the hospital staff.

"We stopped him at yesterday at 11 in the morning at the hospital, where he was visiting his wife [Jennifer Carolina], who is there with physical injuries. He was arrested for threats, resistance and hostile behavior against doctors, police officials and nurses. He was transported to the police station in Mérida," said spokesman Danilo Araque.

Jose Castillo, the legal counsel for Valero, tells BoxingScene the fighter had an appointment scheduled at the U.S. embassy to obtain a work visa. Castillo spoke with Valero's promoters, Top Rank, and plans to reschedule the hearing. Valero told doctors in the hospital that his wife had fallen down a flight of stairs. The doctors, based on the injuries, did not believe the story. Valero's wife suffered her injuries over the weekend because Castillo had already heard about it on Monday.

"I know that Edwin was detained. I have been speaking constantly with the mother of Edwin (Eloíza Vivas) and she provided me with the information about the incident. Edwin had an appointment for the visa on the Wednesday that passed, but on Monday I had already known that his wife had a physical mishap," Castillo said.

"His family told me that she had fallen and he couldn't go to the appointment. I spoke with the legal team of Top Rank and we are going to postpone the appointment for approximately a month, while this situation is being resolved. We will await the outcome from the authorities in Venezuela."

Rufo John, president of Boxtrack, a promotional company in Venezuela, will not make any judgments until the outcome of the investigation.

"We are not judges. The competent agencies will take charge of finding out whether if he is innocent or not. If he is not guilty, we are able to have to Edwin take part in another fight for a world title over here, as we did in December. If he is guilty, it would be a deplorable act," John said.

Valero enters rehab following arrest

CARACAS, Venezuela -- WBC lightweight champion Edwin Valero entered a rehabilitation center Sunday for treatment of drug and alcohol addiction, according to one of the boxer's lawyers.

Milda Mora said Tuesday that Valero entered the rehab center in the Venezuelan city of Merida under court orders following his arrest on charges of harassing his wife, threatening medical personnel who treated her and resisting arrest.

The 28-year-old Valero must attend a series of anger management courses after he leaves the center.

Mora told The Associated Press that Valero tested positive for drug and alcohol use after he was arrested on Thursday. Mora did not provide details regarding Valero's addiction problems, but she said he's hyperactive and suffers from depression.

Police detained Valero following an argument he had with a doctor and nurse at a hospital in Merida, where his wife was being treated for a series of injuries, including a punctured lung and broken ribs.

Valero accused a police officer of pressuring his wife, Jennifer Carolina Viera, to tell authorities her injuries were the result of domestic violence, Mora said. Viera has not publicly commented on the incident.

"There was a verbal argument, but no blows," Mora said.

The boxer's attorney said Viera was injured when she fell down a flight of stairs at the couple's home while checking a water tank located on the roof.

Valero, Venezuela's top-rated boxer, retained his WBC lightweight belt last month by stopping Mexico's Antonio DeMarco, improving to 27-0. None of his bouts have gone the distance.

Jose Sulaiman, president of the World Boxing Council, said in a statement that the organization supports Valero's therapy and hopes he "becomes an example of determination and courage for the world's youth."

Valero in more trouble

By Gabriel F. Cordero

Unbeaten two-division world champion Edwin Valero was involved in a traffic accident and a police chase on Friday in Mérida, Venezuela. There were no injuries but Valero, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, fled the scene of the accident. He was taken home by police. He later said that he fled because he felt harassed by the media and the general public. “I reacted as anyone reacts to this situation,” he stated. The champ promised to take care of the expenses of the other driver. Valero had been scheduled to leave later that day to Cuba with his wife, two children, trainer Mario Morales and adviser Segundo Lujano, where he would begin a rehabilitation program after recognizing his problems with alcohol and drugs. He had just been released Thursday after 14 days of rehab following another incident. Authorities are now reconsidering whether or not they should send Valero to Cuba for further rehab.
