"When it comes to consistency and street-savvy loquaciousness, E-40 tips the scales. Still, despite having essentially written the guide book on how to make it in the indie rap world, he has failed to achieve rap immortality outside of his Bay Area environs.
That could change with this, his eight solo album, which busts through the one limitation E-40 has placed on himself on albums past: a loyal attachment to the parochial, laid-back funk of the West Coast. The spangled guitar licks of "Don't Fuck With Us" and the palmclap shuffle of "It's All Gravity," fore example, conjure the unbridled, call and response energy of a Roc-A-Fella family jam. Mixed with his penchant for sculpting imaginative slang out of ordinary words ("Mustard & Mayonnaise," for example, becomes a euphemism for money and dap), E-40's new musical disposition is liberating. Thankfully, there's still a little Cali Breeze on “Grit N Grind”, as evidenced by E-40's nimble rap on his favorite topic-his stately lifestyle ("Automatic"). Mr. Hustle has finally gone bicoastal"
