Iron Man 3's Don Cheadle talks about the possibility of War Machine getting his own spin-off film, revealing what the movie's plot was back when there were discussions to make it.

Back in 2010, a few months after the release of Iron Man 2, it was rumored that a spin-off film starring Don Cheadle's James Rhodes/War Machine was in the works at Marvel Studios. The actor later confirmed that the movie was in development, but since then, we haven't heard anything about the project until now. On this week's Empire Podcast, Cheadle dropped by to share this thoughts on where a War Machine movie and where it was heading plot-wise. He compares it to the first Iron Man film, saying that he would've been darker and "really realistic". “When we have talked about the [War Machine] spin-off, what the departure point might be for War Machine… [we've discussed that] it might be when he goes rogue, so to speak, and takes a mission that he believes he is morally responsible for but is against policy and does it anyway. What happens when he’s out there and he’s been dishonourably discharged but he still has the suit, or Tony makes him another suit?”

“And now he’s out there on his own too, but even worse than Tony, because now he’s a fugitive. Because if we wanted to do it, I think the best way to do it would be go darker, to take it and make it even more visceral. Sort of close to the first Iron Man, how it began. Really visceral and really realistic.”

Unlike Iron Man 3 co-stars Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle still has more Marvel movies on his contract. While a fourth Iron Man film is looking unlikely right now, he recently expressed interest in appearing in 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier and/or 2015's The Avengers 2. Would you like to see a War Machine film starring Cheadle?

Iron Man 3 is out now in the UK, and will be released May 3rd in the US.

The best way to retire Downey is by keeping Cheadle around since we don't really have any back story for his character at all, and his presence will keep the IM suit in the market and films.
