De La Salle football star shot to death in Richmond

By Nathaniel Hoffman

CONTRA COSTA TIMES

RICHMOND - A talented De La Salle football player on his way to University of Oregon this fall was killed Thursday night in Richmond, police said.

Terrance Kelly, 18, was shot several times about 10:30 p.m. as he waited for his father's girlfriend's son in a car on the 300 block of 7th Street in Richmond's Iron Triangle, Sgt. Enos Johnson said.

When the 16-year-old son came out of his house to meet Kelly, he and saw him slumped out the driver's side of his Oldsmobile that had bumped into a parked car, Johnson said.

He called police and then ran down the street to Kaiser Permanente Medical Center, police said.

Witnesses saw two or three people running west on Nevin after the shooting, and police found a rifle near a fence at the rear of a nearby house, police said.

Police have not positively linked the rifle to the shooting and do not have any suspects or motive.

Kelly had spent the summer in Oregon preparing for college football with several other De La Salle grads, and had returned home for a visit.

"Richmond killed him," said Kelly's 28-year-old cousin Malik Carr. "Richmond killed my cousin. He never got a chance.

"He was the best person to come out of here ever, I never would have thought Terrance would go this way."

Police ask anyone with information on the shooting to call Detective Jose Villalobos at 510-620-6526.
