Knox to have back surgery

CHICAGO – Bears receiver Johnny Knox is slated to undergo surgery Monday to stabilize a vertebra in his mid-to-lower back after getting injured in Sunday's 38-14 loss to the Seahawks.
The prognosis for Knox's career and quality of life is positive.
On the Bears' second possession, Knox caught a Caleb Hanie pass over the middle. After safety Kam Chancellor stripped the ball, Knox turned back toward the line of scrimmage to try to retrieve it and was drilled by defensive end Anthony Hargrove.
Knox's body bent back awkwardly, and he remained down on the field for nearly 10 minutes before being removed on a backboard and taken to the hospital. As he was being wheeled off, he raised his right fist.
After the game, coach Lovie Smith said: "Johnny has total movement throughout his body, has total use of all his extremities, which is good. We're doing tests right now, but he has total movement. He is not paralyzed or anything like that."
Still alive: Though their chances appear minimal at best, the Bears (7-7) can still earn a wildcard berth with wins over the Packers and Vikings as long as either the Lions (9-5) or Falcons (9-5) lose their final two games and the Seahawks (7-7) drop one of their final two contests.
Detroit hosts the Chargers and visits the Packers, the Falcons visit the Saints and host the Buccaneers, and the Seahawks host the 49ers and visit the Cardinals.
We haven’t been eliminated from anything right now and our focus has to be improving and putting a better product on the football field next weekend than we did [Sunday],” Smith said.
Big play: The Bears scored their fourth defensive touchdown of the season Sunday as Julius Peppers stripped the ball from quarterback Tarvaris Jackson in the end zone, and Israel Idonije recovered for his first NFL TD.
With 10 sacks, Peppers has now reached double digits for the seventh time in 10 NFL seasons. His 10 sacks are the most by a Bears player since Mark Anderson had 12 as a rookie in 2006.
Aches and pains: Free safety Chris Conte exited in the second quarter with a foot injury and was replaced by Brandon Meriweather. Craig Steltz was already starting for the injured Major Wright (shoulder) at strong safety.
Numbers game: Bears running back Kahlil Bell rushed for 65 yards on 15 carries and caught five passes for 43 yards, scoring his first NFL touchdown on a 25-yard reception from Hanie. ... For the Seahawks, Jackson completed 19 of 31 passes for 227 yards with one touchdown and a 94.4 passer rating, while Marshawn Lynch rushed for 42 yards and 2 TDs on 20 carries.
