Workers robbed at San Rafael music company

Delfín Vigil, Chronicle Staff Writer

Police searched Sunday for a gunman who robbed three employees at a music distribution company in an industrial area of San Rafael, a San Rafael police spokeswoman said.

The victims were working Saturday inside the nearly 20,000-square-foot office building at 101 Glacier Road, when some time after 11 a.m., the suspect rang the business' doorbell, according to San Rafael police spokeswoman, Margo Rohrbacher.

The business, City Hall Records, is not open to the public, Rohrbacher said.

"The suspect had something around his neck that made the employees think he was authorized to enter the building," said Rohrbacher.

Upon entering the building, the suspect brandished a handgun and demanded that the three victims give him their wallets, purses and cash, said Rohrbacher. A fourth employee was in another room at the time of the robbery, and it was unclear whether her belongings were also stolen, Rohrbacher said. The robbery lasted about five minutes, and the victims were unsure how or whether the suspect left the building.

Around 11:25 a.m., the four women locked themselves in a room and called 911, Rohrbacher said. Police arrived within minutes and helped the employees leave the building safely. None of the women was injured, Rohrbacher said.

A SWAT team, a K-9 unit and about 35 law enforcement officers from several agencies, including San Rafael and Fairfax police departments, Marin County sheriff's department and the California Highway Patrol, surrounded and searched the building for the suspect, who was not found, said Rohrbacher.

The suspect is described as a man in his late teens or early 20s with a short build and severe acne. He was wearing a red-and-white, horizontally striped shirt, baggy cutoff jeans or shorts and a black silver baseball cap.
