LOL@ being 9 pounds over

FIGHT IS STILL ON

Tomorrow night’s 12-rounder between Joan Guzman (29-0-1, 17 KOs) and Ali Funeka (30-2-3, 25 KOs) is still on – but it will not be for the IBF lightweight title, at least for one of the fighters. Earlier today, Guzman weighed in nine pounds heavy, at 144, while Funeka made weight at 135. A deal was struck between camps allowing the fight to go on – providing that Guzman does not weigh more than 150 lbs. tomorrow morning at 7 a.m. If Funeka defeats the overweight Guzman, he will also be allowed to bring the IBF lightweight title home to South Africa.

I'm pretty sure he is going to move up in weight. He really doesn't have a choice.
I think its a pretty smart move on his behalf to blow up like that. So what hes overweight, he's just trying to ensure his victory since he got a gift last time around (saving me from paying my bookie since I was on Guzman). He probably doesn't want the belt since he is going to move up anyways.

Good move.
As a fan, it's bullshit though...

Guzman weighed 148 this morning and Funeka 144. So the fight is still on, the title can only be won by Funeka though.

I'm not sure I agree the extra wight will help guzman because he really doesn't have any power to begin with and his best tools are his speed & reflexes, I think the extra weight will slow him down. Also, he needs to have insane amount of stamina to deal with funeka and again, the weight could slow him down.

Also, it was reported he came to training came 40 pounds overweight and training camp was only 4 weeks. That's a lot of weight to lose in a month.

Just watched the Gamboa fight.

For the first 8 rounds I thought Gamboa fought a very technically sound fight, he didn't make any mistakes at all and barely got touched. He was fighting a guy who was 28-0 but very little was known about him and he was playing the part of a counter puncher, so Gamboa, although it wasn't exciting, was very smart not rushing in and letting himself open to be countered.

In the 8th round Gamboa knocked him down early and then started to murder him, but towards the end of the round gamboa got caught with a nice shot that rocked him a bit.

The later rounds gamboa seemed just a bit sluggish to me, maybe it was fighting in Germany, not sure, but he went back to fighting with his hands down, etc. He still won easy.

Overall it was a good win for him against a pretty tough opponent but importantly that's 12 rounds in the bank and that much more experience.
