Cotto: "Mayweather, Stop Making Excuses"

At his training camp in Puerto Rico, WBA welterweight champion Miguel Cotto (31-0, 25KOs) issued a challenge to Floyd Mayweather Jr (39-0, 25KOs), the WBC titleholder. Speaking with Primera Hora, Cotto told Mayweather to stop making excuses and to give the boxing fans the fight they want most.

"When he decides to fight, he knows that we are ready, that Miguel Cotto is here. He has to stop making excuses and looking for other fights. He knows this is the fight that people want to see," Cotto said.

Cotto returns against Alfonso Gomez on April 12 in Atlantic City. Should he win, a July bout is in the works against the winner of the undercard bout between IBF champion Kermit Cintron and Antonio Margarito.

If anyone is going to be home tonight they have a pretty dope FNF show tonight with maybe Gamboa fighting (not sure if he pulled out of this one) but if he doesn't I think another of the cuban detractors will be shown in Yan Barthelemy.

Also on Telemundo at 11:30 eastern time former champ Oscar Larios is fighting Arturo Gomez in what should be a fairly easy fight but it's still a free Oscar Larios fight on tv .. can't go wrong with that.

^^from what I read today everything is scheduled as planned, so he should be on. Thanks for the hookup on those videos btw, watched them all last week or so.

he'll never do it, mayweather wants the fights he can win and look good winning. Pavlik deserved fighter of the year.
I think it will happen because floyd as we all know is all about the money. He'll make his 10 mil or more from ODH later in the year, his 5 mil from WWE, plus whatever the fuck else he's doin during his "vacation", by early '09 there will be no other boxer he can fight that will generate as much money as cotto can (assuming he doesn't lose before then, which he shouldn't).

And if he doesn't, then fuck him.

^^ What do you think about Mayweather? I recognize his skill level but wonder if it is limited to boxers dumber than himself. Do you have a Cotto vs. Mayweather prediction?

I think he's the best fighter in the world, there's no denying his skills, but he pisses me off sometimes because he doesn't fight the best and is only concerned with money (for the most part) and until he does start fighting better opposition I wont rank him alongside the all times greats.

Cotto is the next best welter imo, I think he would have a legitimate shot at beating floyd, but I think it's still unlikely. Floyd by UD in a pretty close fight.

One thing though about Floyd that is often overlooked is he's a small guy - 147 is probably a lot higher than what he truly should be fighting at, his ideal weight class imo is probably around 135 or even 130. I mean if he wanted to he could fight Manny Pacquiao (which would be sick as fuck).

jesus Gamboa just murdered that guy. I don't recall every seeing a young prospect as good as him.

naner, there is a good article in the latest ring magazine about Gamboa that says the same thing - the writer said he'd never seen a prospect with the amount of skills he has, and the ring presence and the extreme confidence (meaning he just absolutely knows he's going to KO the other guy whenever he wants to) in less than 10 fights in his life, other than Joan Guzman.

I'm gonna have to search out that article. I'm hoping Barthelemy looks good in his fight tonight and I'm glad they're showing it. He hasn't been too impressive lately as he's been fighting like a guy who doesn't have a lot of pop trying to hard for a ko instead of just dominating his opponents.

Diaconu-Hemry winner will be mandatory challenger to Dawson

MONTREAL -- Adrian Diaconu will fight Chris Henry for the interim WBC light-heavyweight title March 29 in Bucharest, Romania.

Promoter InterBox said Friday the winner will become the mandatory challenger for the WBC belt currently held by Chad Dawson, who is scheduled to face Glen Johnson on April 12.

Diaconu (24-0, 15 KOs), who is originally from Romania but now trains in Montreal, was forced to withdraw from a title fight with Dawson on Sept. 29 after breaking his right hand in training. The WBC then ordered an interim championship bout with Henry (21-0, 17 KOs).

"I will be well prepared," Diaconu said in a statement. "My dream since I was a boy was to win a world title and I can't wait to accomplish my dream in Romania."

Giovanni Lorenzo in The Lead For Kelly Pavlik

After the recent fallout of "Irish" John Duddy, it appears that Giovanni Lorenzo (26-0, 18KOs) is possibly the new frontrunner to face Kelly Pavlik (33-0, 29KOs) on June 7 at New York's Madison Square Garden. Duddy's suffered deep cuts during Saturday's majority decision win over Walid Smichet in the co-feature to Klitschko-Ibragimov. One cut above Duddy's left eye will need a significant amount of time to properly heal, which makes a June fight nearly impossible.

Bob Arum, Pavlik's promoter, told reporters that Lorenzo is strong possibility to fight Pavlik on the eve of the Puerto Rican Day Parade.

“I don’t think Duddy is going to be ready because of the cuts,” Arum said. “We’re going to have to go to the drawing board and check out all the other middleweights. One possible opponent is the Dominican, Lorenzo Giovanni. He’s a local fighter and there are a lot of Dominicans here so it may very well be that we go with him if (Duddy’s) eye is cut badly and he can’t make it. Maybe we’ll have to fight Duddy down the road because Kelly is looking to fight three more times this year. So there’ll be plenty of opportunity to fight Duddy if he doesn’t fight him immediately."

WINKY WRIGHT WANTS PAVLIK FIGHT

Last night elite pound for pounder Winky Wright made it clear to **********.com that there's nothing he wants more than a fight with undefeated, undisputed middleweight champion Kelly "The Ghost" Pavlik. "All they have to do is want to make a fight and we'll give the fans what they want to see. There isn't a better middleweight fight than me and Kelly right now and I'm ready to give him his first loss," said Wright. John Duddy, who appeared to be the frontrunner to face Pavlik next, suffered sever lacerations to his face last Saturday night, thus making Pavlik opponentless for his June HBO date. Full interview with Wright to follow tomorrow. Remember where you heard it first! (3:28 PM EST)

Fuck I want that Wright/Pavlik fight...not so much because it would be a good fight, but because I want Winky to get a shot. He'd beat Pavlik, easily, IMO, if he worked and didn't rely on popping him with a shot every 50 seconds.

MAKE IT HAPPEN, BITCHES.

James Toney To Face Danny Williams

By Mark Vester

According to reports coming out of England, UK heavyweight Danny Williams (37-6, 30KOs) is being lined up for a fight with former four-division champion, James "Lights Out" Toney (70-6, 43KOs). The fight is slated to take place in London in either May or June.

Promoter Spencer Fearon, is hoping the fight becomes a WBC eliminator for a title shot.

"Danny is not finished and the heavyweight division is wide open," Fearon said. "Toney is a big name and will help Danny's reputation, plus he'll make Danny look like he is in condition!"

Williams made a name for himself by stopping Mike Tyson in 2004, a few months later he was stopped himself by Vitali Klitschko over 8. He also handed Audley Harrison, Matt Skelton and Scott Gammer their first defeats. Toney has not fought since last May, which saw a poor performance on route to a split-decision win over unknown Danny Batchelder. Afterwards, Toney tested positive for an illegal substance and was on the shelf was serving out a suspension. He's nwo in the clear and ready to return.

The "Sweet" Resurrection of Reggie Johnson

By Michael J. Campbell

“Sweet” Reggie Johnson of Houston, Texas, said he wasn’t on a “comeback,” but rather was in need of some “get back” and returned to the ring for some unfinished business. Titles at middleweight and light heavyweight and 25 world title contests couldn’t satiate his desire to fight and after long contract disputes and wanting to “do things his way,” he finally got another big fight after a two and a half year layoff.

A scheduled contest with top ranked “Gentleman” Glen Johnson was cancelled last November due to and arm injury suffered by Reggie during preparations. Three months later, Glen is scheduled to fight WBC champ Chad Dawson, and former WBO champion Mexican Julio Gonzalez, of Huntington Beach, California, stepped in to battle for the IBA Light Heavyweight Title.

Johnson came in via an extended ring walk, circling the arena, wearing a plain grey sweatshirt and knit cap, giving a very working man impression. When the bell sounded to begin action, Johnson charged across the ring scoring combinations and attacking the body from his southpaw stance. Rope burns and evidence of body punches were already apparent on Gonzalez’s back by the end of the first round.

The forty-one year old former champion demonstrated that his skills were still sharp in making Gonzalez miss many of his punches with superior speed and head movement. Gonzalez came forward constantly though and never lessened his work rate, which began to turn the bout his way as Johnson’s body attack disappeared. “I tweaked my left shoulder in the fourth or fifth round and I couldn’t utilize my left hand as much,” Johnson revealed after the bout.

The middle rounds saw Gonzalez outwork Johnson, whose elusiveness became less effective. Other than a good shot to the ear which staggered Gonzalez momentarily in the seventh round, rounds five thru nine were mostly Julio pushing Reggie into the ropes and landing the bigger punches.

In the tenth, Johnson had his biggest round of the evening landing multiple series of 1-2 combinations which went unanswered from Gonzalez and control of the bout’s pace had turned. The remainder of the contest saw Gonzalez wanting to engage in toe to toe action, while Johnson preferred to evade the initial attempts and draw his foe in for counterpunches, loading up for big power shots seeming to desire a knockdown or even stoppage.

In the end, it was a very tightly scored bout from which the judges had to decide between Gonzalez’s superior aggressiveness and high workrate which controlled the action and pace of the bout, or prefer Johnson’s great head movement, defense, and slicker boxing.

The referee for the bout was Rick Exe. Judge Mickey Lofton scored the bout 116-112 for Johnson, while judge Ray Clarey scored it 116-112 for Gonzalez, and judge Kenny Saintes scored it 115-113 for Johnson, resulting in a Split Decision victory for Reggie Johnson.

Julio Gonzalez commiserated, “I felt I won the fight. He won four rounds at most. It was completely obvious. I’m not afraid to go into anyone’s hometown to fight, but I just want a fair decision. Reggie, you said you’d give me a rematch, but let’s do it in California!”

Jesse Reid, James Green, and Bobby Benton worked Johnson’s corner.

Always one who gave back to his community, Johnson utilized local sparring in Houston and brought young prospects from Houston area gyms to fill out the undercard.

In the co-main event, Houston’s Maurenzo “T-Diddy” Smith engaged in a six round contest with comebacking veteran James “Machine Gun” Gatlin of Atlanta. After a long period of inactivity, Gatlin seemed ill-prepared to go the distance. Smith was able to have his will with him and land any shots he so desired. Gatlin was gassed and relied on the strategy of trying to draw Smith in and load up with one big shot. He didn’t land many and when they did, they did little damage. The referee called an end to the one sided affair midway through the final round. Smith now looks to contend for the Texas cruiserweight title in a bout which would complete his trilogy with rival “Crazy” Robbie McClimmans of Conroe.

“Mean” Eugene Hill of Dickinson, Texas, moved to 10-0 disposing of Rozell Traylor in the first round. Last year Traylor dropped his pro debut to Hill by second round TKO. With three more fights under his belt and coming off a victory, Traylor attempted to avenge his loss. Hill wanted to top his previous performance and did just that, knocking out his foe just before the end of the first round. He demonstrated his maturation as a fighter in remaining patient and focused during the bout. He cornered Traylor on the ropes and put him down twice with well placed combinations. The first time he bounced back up, but the on the second occasion, the referee counted him out.

Lafayette, Lousiana’s, Wilford Sypion, Jr. remained perfect in gaining his fourth knockout victory in as many tries. He is the son of the legendary middleweight who had memorable bouts with Marvin Hagler, Iran Barkley, Mustafa Hamsho, & Frankie Fletcher. With his opponent putting up little resistance, Sypion landed combinations and attacked the body, resulting in scored knockdowns in rounds one and three before referee Kenny Saintes had seen enough.

2007 Texas Golden Gloves champion Justin Jones of Houston, picked up his second victory scoring a shutout over Kirby Gillespie of Dallas. Jones boxed well, breaking through Gillespie’s jabs and clutching tactics to land flurries and body shots.

Houston heavyweight Herman “Skip” Scott received his 2nd victory by way of TKO when referee Rick Exe decided that Charles Scott’s activity level wasn’t at a high enough level for the bout to continue. Skip held a huge height and reach advantage over Charles

Mike Martinez made quick work of Jerrick Stephens winning via first round stoppage.

The bouts will be delay broadcast online from the website
