Bernard Hopkins: "I Will Take Kelly Pavlik To School"

New York - When a powerful young champion and devastating knock-out artist meets a future Hall of Fame boxing legend and two-division world champion who has never been knocked out, there will be plenty of debate and speculation as to who will win. That will definitely be the case when Kelly “The Ghost” Pavlik faces Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins in a light heavyweight battle at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall on Saturday October 18 in a bout presented by Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions, in association with Caesars Atlantic City. The fight will be produced and distributed live by HBO Pay-Per-View, beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

Tickets, priced at $700, $500, $350, $200, $100 and $75, go on sale Friday, August 8 at 12 Noon ET and can be purchased at the Boardwalk Hall box office, by calling Ticketmaster (800) 736-1420 or online at www.Ticketmaster.com .

Pavlik, the current undefeated middleweight world champion, who is moving up in weight to face Hopkins at 170 pounds, has been compared to an express train as he continues to thrill boxing fans with his aggressive ring style, devastating power and 90% knock-out ratio. Will the Pavlik Express Train be derailed when he faces the formidable Hopkins, already comfortable at light heavyweight and whose gritty, defensive brilliance usually frustrates opponents? Ranked number five and six consecutively on ESPN.com’s boxing pound-for-pound list, this intriguing match-up pits a young lion against a polished veteran, a devastating offense against an impenetrable defense and current world champion against a legendary former world champion in what looks to be an epic battle of grit and determination.

“I am preparing to fight a legend and take him down in his own backyard,” said Pavlik. “Even though I am younger, I know Hopkins is a slick veteran with a bunch of boxing tricks in his bag. I refuse to underestimate him and I know on October 18, he will be ready to fight. I am treating this as if it were a championship match with my plan being to remain undefeated and show the world that I am able to take on any fighter regardless of age, weight or record.”

“Kelly Pavlik has a heart of a lion but he has no idea what he is in for on October 18,” said Hopkins. “Pavlik might be the latest thing on a fast track to fame, but I am a sure thing and will take this kid to school that night and teach him a lesson he will never forget.”

Bob Arum, CEO of Top Rank said: “There is no doubt that Bernard Hopkins is a great fighter and was virtually unstoppable in his prime, but Kelly Pavlik is recognizably one of the best fighters in boxing today and he will continue to prove his himself against a legendary fighter like Bernard. This is a tremendous challenge for Kelly on October 18”

“The match-up between Kelly Pavlik and Bernard Hopkins will be one for the record books,” said Oscar de la Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions. “Hopkins has the experience and Pavlik has the desire to prove himself. I am looking forward to seeing Pavlik defend his undefeated record but I know Bernard can rise to the occasion and take down one of boxing’s brightest stars.”

“It doesn't get any better than this”, said Ken Condon, Atlantic City boxing expert for Caesars Atlantic City. “Kelly Pavlik, Atlantic City's most recent boxing hero and world champion takes on the cagey veteran Bernard Hopkins from Philadelphia in his own back yard. Caesars Atlantic City is proud to continue its tradition of bringing World Class events to Atlantic City.”

“Fight fans know that Kelly and Bernard will bring everything in their arsenals when they enter the ring on October 18,” said Mark Taffet Senior Vice President of HBO PPV. “This battle of wills between two such accomplished fighters makes Pavlik-Hopkins a very intriguing match-up.”

The undefeated star from Youngstown, Ohio, Kelly “The Ghost” Pavlik (34-0, 30 KOs), the reigning WBC, WBO and Ring Magazine middleweight world champion, has already proved to the boxing world why he is one of the most popular stars in the sport today. Pavlik had a stellar year in 2007 when he truly arrived on the championship scene, scoring devastating wins over Edison Miranda in a title eliminator and Jermain Taylor, in which he was stunned badly before coming back and annihilating Taylor in the seventh round, to capture the first middleweight title of his career. He’s been unstoppable since with a dominating performance over Taylor in their rematch and most recently, a third round knock-out over the then undefeated Gary Lockett. Those performances, along with a 90% knock-out ratio, have cemented his place among the middleweight championship division. He will now move up 10 pounds to make his light heavyweight debut in what will be a meaningful and career-defining fight against the much heralded Hopkins.

Known as one of the greatest middleweights of all time, future Hall of Famer Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins (48-5-1, 32 KOs) held a world title as a middleweight or light heavyweight every year since 1995. In 2006, Philadelphia’s Hopkins moved up to light heavyweight for the first time in his career to defeat Antonio Tarver winning The Ring Magazine World Championship and then dominated Winky Wright at 170 pounds to continue to prove his ring supremacy. This year, on April 19, Hopkins fought the undefeated Welshman Joe Calzaghe, knocking him down in the first round before losing his light heavyweight title by a narrow split decision that left many boxing fans dissatisfied with the verdict. Never shunning stiff opposition, Hopkins now prepares to meet Pavlik and prove to boxing fans around the world that it is not over yet for one of the greatest pound-for-pound fighters in the history of sport.

The historic Boardwalk Hall, which first opened in 1929, underwent a three year, $90 million renovation to transform the building into a modern special events arena capable of variable seating for up to 14,500 people. LOL... I wish I did pick Margarito. I picked Cotto to win because I thought the same as you (in regards to Cotto outboxing Margarito).

But if Bernard loses this fight it's over. I know he's not going to let Pavlik just come in and punch all night. Pavlik is one dimensional... he doesn't even throw hooks man...

Bernard should counter punch more in this fight and catch Pavlik slippin'... I don't see Bernard finishing him though.

bernard is by far the superior boxer and athlete, so I don't doubt that he'll be able to land flush countershots all night. Obviously the big problem is that he's 43. Will his body allow him to keep a decent pace for 12 rounds, or will he fade late in the rounds, as he did against Calzaghe? I just hope he has enough gas in the tank

@Redrum: Cut and pasted this Clottey interview... ya boy lied and quit!

James Slater: Firstly, Joshua, congratulations on becoming the new IBF world champion.

Joshua Clottey: "Thank you, thank you. It feels good, I am very happy."

J.S: Did you always know you would beat Zab Judah?

J.C: "Yeah, I always knew. I knew I'd be too much for him. I'm bigger and stronger and I knew I'd have too much for him."

J.S: If the fight had not been stopped and made a technical decision in the 9th round, do you think you would have stopped Judah?

J.C: "Yeah, I do. There was no way he was going to go another three rounds. I knew he was in trouble, because every time he hit me I didn't feel his punches. And he was getting very tired. I was definitely going to stop him if the fight had gone on."

J.S: To ask you out flat; do you think Judah quit?

J.C: "(raising his voice a touch) Yeah, he quit! He quit! He said it was a head-butt to get out of the fight. But it was a left uppercut [that opened the cut]. He used his head and thought of a way out of the fight. I do not think the referee (Robert Byrd) did a good job in the fight. He listened to him [Zab and his corner] and let him tell him it was a head butt."

J.S: Is it also true that you hurt your right bicep in the fight?

J.C: "It was my left arm. Yeah, I hurt my left arm in the 5th round, I think it was."

J.S: And how is the arm now?

J.C: "It's healing right now. It's still painful, but it's getting better."

J.S: Will it keep you out of the ring for the rest of this year - when do you think you will you be ready to fight again?

J.C: "I want to fight again this year. I think I will be able to fight again in November or December. I am going home to Africa first, though."

J.S: And who is it you want to fight - Antonio Margarito?

J.C: "Yes, I want to fight Margarito. I want to avenge that loss (on points in 2006), because I know I was winning the fight until my hands gave out. I'm ready to fight him. I'll be bigger and stronger than him. I'm a very big welterweight. I struggle to make weight, but I can do it by training hard."

J.S: Are there any other names at 147 you'd like to fight?

J.C: "Yeah, I want to fight the new WBC champion - what's his name? Oh, [Andre] Berto, yes. I want to fight him. Not for any particular reason like he's the best or anything. But he has the WBC title. I very much want to unify. If they give me the chance I will unify the welterweight division."

I sincerely want to thank the brand new IBF 147-pound world champion for the time he afforded me.

Bernard Hopkins Speaks: What he wants from Roy Jones Jr.
On October 18th at the Atlantic City Boardwalk Hall, Bernard Hopkins returns to take on Kelly Pavlik. Hopkins still wants to fight on after Pavlik with the hopes of a rematch with Roy Jones Jr. Hopkins lost to Jones Jr. back in 1993.

Hopkins doesn't plan on his fight with Pavlik to be his last, recently telling Bernard Fernandez of the Philadelphia Daily News: "I think people still want to see me and Roy Jones Jr. before we both head off to the retirement home." Hopkins added that he thinks the Jones Jr. fight will be his grand exit.

Hopkins who feels he has gotten raw deals in his losses to Joe Calzaghe and Jermain Taylor, jokingly added to the publication that if his fights keep ending the way they have been: "You might see me around for the next 10 years."

O6 I forgot to mention Andre Berto.... I think he's a good fighter. He could give Margarito and Clottey problems. What you think about him? That fool is pretty fast and doesn't fade late like Judah.

Here's my new list:
Clottey
Berto
Margarito
Paul Williams
Cotto

Berto is definitely a solid fighter, but he may be a bit young. I'd like to see him against a lil higher opponents before fuckin wit any of those guys mentioned.

I'd give him a good chance to beat Clottey as of right now.
Margarito would be too tough.
Paul Williams, man he's just too big for virtually anyone.
Cotto I think would be a good fight.

WW is such an interesting division, it's dificult to pick one clear #1 guy. Styles make fights and I think these current Welters, there's a problem of fighter A could beat fighter B but not C, while C would lose to fighter B. lol, it's tight like that.

And don't forget about Kermit Cintron, I don't think he's done just yet...

I agree you've made good points. In regards to Cintron, I think he's done with Margarito... LOL... Margarito ain't no joke though. He do be knockin' fools out huh...

I think Berto could give Margarito fits like. I think Berto would be a problem for any fighter, but Clottey is number one on my WW list.

I wasn't very impressed with Clottey against Judah. Someone a lil smarter and tougher then Judah could box circles around him, imo. Thing is, it's nearly impossible to hurt him, just like Margarito.

As of right now, if I had to chose, I got Paul Williams at the top. I mean he did beat margarito fair and square.

Well, Margarito has no excuse. Paul Williams offering a gauranteed $4 million plus 50/50 split of net revenues. Margarito better take this fight!

Paul Williams: "Margarito Knows I'll Beat Him Again"

Los Angeles, CA – Could there be a “Pride and Punishment II” in the near future? That is the question promoter Bob Arum and his promotional firm Top Rank must ponder following a written offer presented to them by Goossen Tutor Promotions’ Dan Goossen last week following Antonio Margarito’s destruction of unbeaten Miguel Cotto in capturing the WBA Welterweight Title by an 11th round TKO.

Last July, the prideful Mexican hero – ignoring conventional wisdom of accepting a million dollar plus fight with then WBA Welterweight Champion Miguel Cotto – risked his WBO Welterweight Title against mandatory challenger, the dangerous Paul “The Punisher” Williams (34-1, 25 KOs). In what was an epic toe-to-toe battle in front of a sold out Home Depot Center in Carson, California, the gallant Mexican lost a close but unanimous decision – and his title – to Williams, a native of Aiken, South Carolina.

“The offer to Top Rank for the Williams-Margarito rematch is quite simple,” Goossen said. Goossen Tutor would guarantee $4,000,000 to Top Rank/Margarito against a 50% split of net revenues. This is a major fight for our sport and one that would draw tremendous fan and media interest.”

“Williams shows his confidence in being the “most feared fighter in the World” today by his willingness to fight the man he beat a little over a year ago. There’s nothing for Williams’ to prove against Margarito, he already did that on July 14, 2007 in the ring. But Paul is always about the biggest and most compelling fights. It’s Margarito’s turn this time to do his best to change the verdict and Paul is saying ‘you gave me the chance, and now I’ll be happy to give you the same opportunity.’”

“When Margarito said he wanted a rematch right after our fight on July 14th, I said I was happy to give him one, so of course I'd be just as happy to give him a rematch in November,” Williams stated.

When asked about the possibility of the rematch not happening, Williams said, “His promoter knows that if me and Margarito get in the ring again, I would win. They know I know how to fight him and I’m as tough. Of course he has a chance to upset me, but the chance is slim.”

Ever since that war on that hot 2007 summer night in which Williams defeated Margarito by outworking and outlanding him with a constant onslaught of head and body shots, fans of both champions have been clamoring for an encore of what in many eyes was the 2007 “Fight of the Year.”

“I’m sure Margarito’s fans want to see him redeem himself against Williams,” observed Goossen, “and I know fans of Paul Williams want to see him put Margarito in his place again while unifying the WBO and WBA welterweight titles.

“For this fight it’s winner take all in my eyes. Our sport thrives with compelling fights and it’s hard to imagine that their second fight would be better than the first but I believe it would break all records for actual number of big time punches thrown in a fight,” Goossen said.

If the rematch isn’t made, Williams plans to continue toward every conceivable meaningful challenge toward greatness.

“I'm top heavy, so it's easy for me to get down to 147 when I start training. I walk around about 160 so I can go up and down between 147 and 168,” Williams said. “I just want to fight. I want to fight people who are on the same level with me or on a higher level than me in their mind. That’s what boxing is all about, risk. My fans always tell me they love that about me.”

Added George Peterson, Williams’ trainer, "These guys are afraid of Paul, even the middleweights, but it makes no sense with the money they can make fighting him they still have to be dragged into the ring ... the boxing fans want to see good fights and we’ll do our part to take on the riskiest fights presented to us. When I think about it, if I put myself in that situation of having to fight Paul, I probably wouldn’t want to fight Paul Williams’ either," he chuckled.

I really don't see Berto fucking with anyone on that list. He's never been pressured to fade so that's not really proven. Judah has won decisions over decent fighters before without fading, it's when he's in against someone that isn't gonna break to him that he flops. Berto is fast and has decent power but, IMO, he gets stomped on as soon as he steps up.

He might've lost to Cosme if they didn't need to suddenly remove his gloves when he was doing the Judah dance.

I think Williams has earned his right to fight Margarito now. Cotto vs Clottey would be a cool fight but I see Cotto taking an easier fight to rebound. I wouldn't mind seeing Berto vs Cintron to see where Berto's at.

Angulo's still too young in his career and Margaritos fought at 154 before plus Angulo has his own tornado to deal in his next fight. Tsurkan is usually all action.

.. Berto vs Mosley would also be a pretty dope fight.

IMO, although ill admit i wanted to see Paul Williams win (that was then, not now) when he first fought Margarito I was scared the entire fight that if Margarito really just went to town on Williams the fight wouldve been over in a heart beat. I think Williams got lucky w/ his last fight - damn lucky. I still say he's underweight and isnt really a KO puncher especially at a higher weight. Williams is gonna have a man on a mission if he fight Margarito. I think Margarito walks right thru William's jab this time and sets up shop in his chest. It wont play out the same at all next time around! Dont forget folks Margarito is riding a high of knowing he can beat the best if he brings it, which he didnt do for the full 12 in that first fight. IMO Williams gets kO'd Quintana style in the next fight.

Berto is all hype - right now. I think he'll prove to be another Judah unless he sticks around long enough to wait out his top competition to move up or retire. I cant get over seein him go down on ESPN2.. somethin about his character struck me, even tho he came back to win.

I hate to see Cintron out on his ass. He lost to Margarito and in light of how margarito pot crocked Cotto we gotta give Cintron a big pat on the back for haviing fought the man twice especially considering how the first one went down!

I dont think Cotto will take on Clottey but Id love to see it just as an immediate test to see where his head and heart is it. I mean the mans been hurt in the 140 and 147 weight div thats gotta say somethin, especially if it keeps happenin

ill insert that i think a younger shane mosley wouldve handled cotto

I agree 100% on how you got the Margarito/Williams rematch happening. At the end of the fight it seemed as if Margarito was cranking it up and doing real damage especially to the body. There were times later in the fight where Williams would almost bend over from a Margarito body attack. That being said the win is legit and he deserves the rematch while Margarito is at the top. It's Margarito's own fault for waiting too long to get things started. The same thing happened when he fought Santos. He couldn't figure him out early enough and ended losing on a headbutt decision.

If Margarito has Williams figured out, which I'd think he does, Williams is fucked. If Margarito gets started early against him I think he's done and Margarito ain't gonna get blasted out in one round.

LOL... I own Redrum. We go at it quite often as you can see. He seems to remember everytime I am wrong on a prediction but then finds someway to forgot when my predictions are on point. He's my boy and all but he's gotta learn how to man up and bow down. He's still learning.... I'll give him more time.
LOL @ OWNING anything; You've only owned yourself.

Your track record speaks for itself. I've admitted when I'm wrong, and have no problem doing it. You're still defending Aaron Brooks and calling yourself a Raiders fan and predicting a Super Bowl. Call it ''high expectations'', but as a 20+ year fan of the team and it's inner workings, I call it dillusional.

LOL I'm cool, though...you can pretend like you've accomplished something, but your track record speaks for itself. Ask anyone besides me on here.
