U forget Matthysse hits harder than Garcia so the question is can Garcia take the punishment he will receive? They both seem to have decent chins but this fight will really put that to the test. Garcia is slow to me and I dont think he will have much success with his hooks landing. Well see. Got Em!!

Garcia wins by ko, I'm not sold on matthysee yet. I am on Garcia tho and he's not even in his prime yet. Garcia knows how to win by any means and his dad is great at getting in his opponents heads. Garcia has a tough fight with zab, if he looks good he will take matthysee's head imo watch and see

Anytime a fighter gets stripped for not fighting their mandatory it looks bad. I wouldn't want the reputation of a ducker. See Sturm/Geale for ducking Golovkin.

Plus Garcia already KOd khan why fight him again? He should move on and fight for greatness. You didn't see Bernard Hopkins rematch Trinidad even though it would have been good money. Fight for legacy.

True, but this is a business and fighters should look at it that way. They have families to feed. Fighters can't please everyone. I could care less if Garcia fought khan again, just looking at it in a business sense

Brandon Rios: "I think everyone is going to be a little scared of me right now"
By Jenna Jay, OnTheRopes Boxing Radio, Doghouse Boxing (Jan 11, 2013)
Brandon "Bam Bam" Rios had a roller coaster 2012, as it was a year he was a must see fighter who had lots of fans talking about his fighting style and success in the ring, but also questions regarding his commitment due to trouble making weight in certain fights. There was also some controversy due to a decision he received in a title bout that many believe he should of lost. Rios ended the year in style with a thrilling fight with Mike Alvarado at a new weight class, silencing some of his critics. During the 184th edition of "On The Ropes" I had a chance to talk with Brandon about all of these things, and also touch a little on his career and what he sees next for him. Here is part one of my two part interview with Brandon Rios.

Jenna Jay: Brandon, the last time we saw you in the ring was a fight that got consideration by most for fight of the year. Now that you have had a little time to reflect on that fight, what are you thoughts?

Brandon Rios: That fight was a great fight. I showed the world what I can do with a bigger opponent, first time at 140 taking a tough competitor and a dangerous one. I just proved what I can do when I'm ready, my weights perfect, when I train right and prepare for a guy, they see what I can do and I just showed that to the world fighting Mike Alvarado the way I did. I think everyone is going to be a little scared of me right now.

Jenna: You took quite few shots in that fight, so I have to ask, at any point were you hurt?

Rios: I was never hurt, never dazed, nothing like that. There was only one round where he caught me with an uppercut that knocked my mouth piece out, but I was not hurt, I felt great. If you see the fight you can see me smiling the whole time during the fight. I love to fight and I love what I do, so it was great.

Jenna: Why Brandon, why do you like that type of fight? Face first, taking punches, why are you attracted to that type of fight?

Rios: Because it's like a high for me, like a drug, an addiction. I was born in the getto, and I love to fight, I grew up fighting, so that type of fight is always the type of fight I bring to the table, and I love it, it's the best.

Jenna: You use to have trouble making 135lbs before that last fight. How much of a relief is it for you to finally be a weight class you are comfortable?

Rios: It's a big relief because the last 5 pounds are the hardest to lose, now I can go out and fight the way I fight, not worry about getting tired, holding punches back, so it's a big relief and I can do a lot more in the ring and be a whole lot stronger, so I'm very happy I made this decision, and I should of made it a long time ago, or two fights ago, but I was young and dumb and still thought I could make it. Not no more, never do that again.

Jenna: Let go back and talk a little about your career Brandon. The fight that really brought you out and grabbed peoples attention, back when you fought an undefeated Anthony Peterson who was 30-0. Can you tell me what you think that fight did for you.

Rios: Well that fight showed the world, who is Brandon Rios. That's my ultimate fight, I just showed the world what I can do when I prepare myself and be ready and not focus to much on a weigh in, actually training for the fight, I'm a animal in the ring, I'm a beast, I'm a monster. What the fight did was show that I was ready for the big dogs, I can beat an undefeated guy, I can beat a number one guy, and can beat those type of guys and that's what happened in that fight and I'm ready to prove it again with whomsoever next.

Jenna: You are no stranger to fun and action packed fights, as the match you won your title was that was way. Can you tell the fans a little about your fight with Miguel Acosta?

Rios: Oh man, it was a dream I always had, to fight for a world title when I started fighting at the age of 10. I always wanted to fight for a world title, I always wanted to be a world champion, so fighting Miguel Acosta and just fighting the way we fought – Miguel was slick boxer puncher, he moved he boxed very well, he did everything he had to do, and he stayed on his game plan, and I stayed on my game plan and I wore him down. The body shots, the head shots I just wore him down and got him out of there. It was a great fight.

Jenna: Brandon, every career has it's up and downs, and for you I think the low came after the Richard Abril fight. Most boxing fans felt you lost that one, even thought you got the decision. What do you think of that perception out there?

Rios: Honestly, I watched the fight a couple of times already and I looked at it, and I keep looking at it and ya, I was a great fight, I mean not a great fight, I was not myself because of the fact I was already weight drained, I was dead the next day and did not really feel like fighting, like my whole self I was not 100%. Yes it was a very close fight, but I feel I did enough to win that fight. He did not want to fight, he just wanted to hug me hold me, and his whole game plan was just to try and frustrate me, which you know it did get to me a little bit, but not too much, and he did not do to much to win the fight.

Pacquiao’s April fight likely in Asia for tax purposes; Marquez not part of card
Boxing article posted on January 11th, 2013 | Post Comment

manny pacquiao juan manuel marquez By Allan Fox: The doubleheader idea of having Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez on the same card for April 20th appears to have been dismissed by Pacquiao’s team, as they reportedly don’t want the extra expense of having Marquez on the same card, according to the Manila Bulletin.

Pacquiao’s next fight will likely be in Asia rather than the United States due the lower taxes. They have three locations they’re targeting: Dubai, Macau or Singapore. Having Pacquiao’s next fight in one of those locations will likely dramatically lower his taxes compared to if it was to be staged in the U.S.

Pacquiao’s adviser Michael Koncz told the Manila Bulletin “We’re fighting in April and we already have an opponent in mind.”

Koncz also shot down the idea of Pacquiao and Marquez fighting on the same card, saying it won’t be done because of “Extra expenses” involved it was to be made. That makes sense because Marquez will likely be asking for huge money in his next fight and if he does that it’s not going to make it tough for Pacquiao to get his usual $20 million+ that he receives, especially if this fight is just a tune-up for him against a less than popular fighter.

Pacquiao is popular enough on his own to still get huge pay per view totals even against a lesser known fighter, but if you add Marquez to the card fighting a little known opponent as well, there might not be enough money to go around to keep both fighters making the kind of money that they deserve.

As for who Pacquiao will be fighting, it’s still unknown. If Bob Arum, Pacquiao’s promoter, decides he wants Pacquiao to fight one of his guys from his Top Rank stable, then the options will be kind of limited with Pacquiao having to pick between Brandon Rios and Tim Bradley. Those aren’t tune-up type opponents and each of them presents a big hurdle for Pacquiao. Arum would be wiser to pick out someone a little less talented and someone that doesn’t hit too hard. Right now, Pacquiao shouldn’t be facing a huge puncher after the way he was knocked out last December by Marquez.

Judah: Danny Garcia is not going to be a network star, he’s not the one
Boxing article posted on January 10th, 2013 | Post Comment

Garcia Judah Garcia vs. Judah zab judah danny garcia By Allan Fox: Former two division world champion Zab Judah (42-7, 29 KO’s) confesses that he probably only has two to three more years left in his career, but he doesn’t think that Showtime is making the right decision in hitching their wagon to WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (25-0, 16 KO’s), thinking he’s going to be a big star. Judah doesn’t see star qualities in Garcia and he thinks Showtime or even HBO are making a mistake if they invest time and effort into Garcia.

Judah said to Sportsillustrated.cnn.com “This guy [Garcia] is not the one. Everyone, HBO, Showtime, this is not the one He is not the one.”

Judah thinks Amir Khan would have beaten Garcia in their fight last year in July had Khan simply chosen to box Garcia instead of trying to get in the trenches and slug with him. Judah thinks Khan would have easily won that fight had he stayed on the outside, jabbed and fought a conservative fight for 12 rounds.

Judah thinks Garcia can’t initiate offense on his own and can only take advantage of his opponent’s mistakes by nailing them with big left hooks when they come at him trying to slug it out.

Judah does have a point. If you look at Garcia’s fight with Kendall Holt, you’ll notice that Garcia wasn’t able to do much in the fight with Holt staying on the outside and not coming at him trying to slug it out the way that Erik Morales and Amir Khan.

By choosing to stay at a distance, Holt was able to take away Garcia’s left hook and that left Garcia with only his ability to jab and throw long right hands. Garcia has a good right hand, but it’s not a big knockout punch the way his left hook is. His right hand isn’t better than many of the other fighters at light welterweight.

Judah and Garcia will be fighting next month on February 9th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Dirrell training with Mayweather Sr; Audley Harrison to compete in Prizefighter
Boxing article posted on January 10th, 2013 | Post Comment

audley harrison andre dirrell By Scott Gilfoid: Super middleweight Andre Dirrell (20-1, 14 KO’s) is being trained by Floyd Mayweather Sr to get ready for a fight coming up in the next few months. The talented Dirrell was rumored to be fighting Rowland Bryant but that fight doesn’t appear to be on the plate for Dirrell.

Dirrell told Chris Robinson at hustleboss.com “He’s a great trainer and the work is nothing less than perfect so I’m enjoying it. I’m just sharpening up my skills to give a more crowd pleasing performance.”

Dirrell hasn’t fought since blowing out Darryl Cunningham by a 2nd round knockout in December 2011. Dirrell is being promoted by 50 Cent now and hopefully he can get this amazing talent some fights because Dirrell is too good for him to be wasting away like this while lesser talents hold titles in the super middleweight division.

If Dirrell had been staying active in the past two years he’d no doubt be one of the world champions at 168 and he might even be a two belt holder. I could see Dirrell beating both Carl Froch and Mikkel Kessler as long as the fights were held in a neutral venue.

41-year-old Audley Harrison (28-6 21 KO’s) will be taking part in the Prizefighter tournament heavyweight quarter-final on February 23rd at the York Hall in Bethnal Green, London, UK. This is a real backwards move for Harrison, but not a surprising one. Harrison has lost two out of his last three fights and looked awful. It looks like Audley is trying to recapture his success from 2009 when he captured the Prizefighter heavyweight tournament with wins over Coleman Barrett, Danny Hughes and Scott Belshaw.

Harrison was able to take the win in the Prizefighter tourney to get a big money fight against David Haye. Obviously, that’s not going to happen again because even if Audley wins the tourney in beating a handful of obscure 2nd tier heavyweights, he’s probably not going to get another fight against Haye or fights against David Price or Tyson Fury. I say probably because somehow I can see one of those three heavyweights choosing to fight Audley because he’s well known and a safe fight where you know you’re going to beat him.
