DEVON ALEXANDER VS. RANDALL BAILEY OFFICIALLY ADDED TO OCT. 20 BARCLAYS CENTER CARD
By Press Release | September 19, 2012

The IBF Welterweight World Championship bout between Devon Alexander and Randall Bailey has been added to boxing's debut event at Brooklyn, New York's Barclays Center on Saturday, October 20. An already star-studded fight card now features four compelling world championship bouts with titlists in the 140, 147 and 160-pound divisions defending their belts. An undercard featuring the most promising and talented New York fighters rounds out a historic night as world championship boxing returns to Brooklyn for the first time since 1931.

Alexander vs. Bailey, a 12-round bout for Bailey's IBF Welterweight World Championship, is presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with The Great Promotions and DiBella Entertainment and will be part of an unprecedented four-title-fight telecast on SHOWTIME. The fight was originally slated for Saturday, Sept. 8 at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas, but was postponed when Bailey suffered a back injury.

"We are thrilled to not only be re-announcing this hard-hitting matchup, but also to be able to add it to the already powerful night of boxing planned for Barclays Center on October 20," said Oscar De La Hoya, president of Golden Boy Promotions. "With four world championship fights and a great undercard to kick off a new era of boxing in Brooklyn, this show is going to be like the Super Bowl of boxing and definitely will be a night to remember."

"I really didn't think the Barclays Center event could get any bigger, but that is exactly what has happened," said Stephen Espinoza, Executive Vice President and General Manager, SHOWTIME Sports®. "It's been our strategy at Showtime to increase the quality and the quantity of our boxing coverage. For this network to televise four title fights on one night, not on pay-per-view, demonstrates the commitment we've made to our subscribers and to boxing fans. Thanks to the promoters and to Devon and Randall for bringing this fourth fight to the table. What a special night this will be for these talented fighters, for Brooklyn and for the sport of boxing."

"We are extremely excited to be apart of this boxing extravaganza," said Kevin Cunningham, CEO of The Great Promotions. "Brooklyn has produced some of boxing's biggest stars, so it's an honor to get this opportunity."

"Randall is the hardest puncher in boxing and he is a true champion," said Lou DiBella, president of DiBella Entertainment. "If Devon Alexander wants his belt he is going to have to take it and withstand the hardest right hand in the sport."

"A night of this magnitude is made for Brooklyn," said Barclays Center CEO Brett Yormark. "Barclays Center is launching its first boxing event with an unprecedented four-title-fights in one night. Brooklyn has raised some of the greatest world championship fighters and it deserves an event of this caliber."

Devon Alexander "The Great" (23-1, 13 KO's), no stranger to facing and beating powerful knockout artists as evidenced by his last two wins coming against current World Champion Lucas Matthysse and former World Champion Marcos Maidana, has the skill and will to baffle any opponent he faces. An eight-year professional who held both the WBC Super Lightweight and IBF Junior Welterweight World Titles before losing them via a controversial and close technical decision to Timothy Bradley in 2011, the proud 25-year-old St. Louis native has since reinvented himself at 147 pounds. After his big wins over two of Argentina's best in Maidana (W10) and Matthysse (W 10), Alexander is looking forward to proving himself once again by beating Bailey and becoming a two-division world champion.

"The opportunity to be a part of this piece of boxing history means a lot to me," said Alexander. "Randall Bailey and I have some unfinished business and I plan on starting the night off right for all of the fans watching at the new Barclays Center and at home on SHOWTIME. I am going to walk away as the IBF Welterweight World Champion on October 20."

A veteran of more than 16 years in the professional game, Randall Bailey (43-7, 37 KO's) has not slowed down a bit at age 37. In fact, if his recent one-punch knockout of previously unbeaten Mike Jones in June is any indication, he may be more powerful than ever. The Miami resident has always had a gift for blasting out anyone who stood in his line of fire. Bailey utilized his trademark power to claim his first world title in 1999 when he knocked out Carlos Gonzalez for the WBO Junior Welterweight World Championship in just 41 seconds. In 2002, Bailey won a second title by knocking out Demetrio Ceballos, but his victory over Jones earlier this year for the IBF Welterweight crown, which extended his unbeaten streak to five in a row, may have been the sweetest win yet. Now, he looks to defend that title for the first time on October 20, in Brooklyn.

"I am so happy to be able to get back in the gym and continue to train," said Bailey. "At my age you can't take anything for granted and injuries are harder to overcome, but I am totally healed and ready to shock the world again by beating another young fighter like Devon Alexander. I said I would knock Devon Alexander out before and I am going to say it again. It's going to be a great fight."

In the evening's main event, unbeaten Danny "Swift" Garcia defends his WBA Super, WBC & Ring Magazine Super Lightweight World Championships as he rematches with legendary Mexican warrior and future Hall of Famer Erik "El Terrible" Morales. In the evening's other co-featured bouts, also to be televised live on SHOWTIME, Brooklyn's own Paulie "Magic Man" Malignaggi puts his WBA Welterweight World Championship on the line against hard-hitting Pablo Cesar "El Demoledor" Cano and undefeated, number one rated WBO middleweight contender Peter "Kid Chocolate" Quillin of Manhattan takes on unbeaten Hassan N'Dam in a 12-round battle for N'Dam's WBO Middleweight World Championship.

The undercard is stacked with a bevy of New York's best including Brooklyn's hot middleweight prospect Daniel "The Golden Child" Jacobs, former World Champion Luis Collazo, the Bronx's rising star Eddie Gomez, former world title contender Dmitriy Salita and Brooklyn prospect Boyd Melson.

The fights will mark the first event of the previously announced deal between Barclays Center and Golden Boy Promotions under which at least 12 boxing events per year will be hosted at the new sports and entertainment venue.

Keep in mind Dawson challenged Ward at 168 pounds. Ward didn't make him do anything. It was also in Oakland because Dawson has no fanbase whatsoever, so the only place it would sell is Oakland.

Ward would beat Martinez in Argentina, doesn't matter where. It will never happen though.

Also, Cotto-Martinez won't likely happen either since Martinez said he wants a catchweight, which Cotto won't do as he wont go up anymore than 154.

Most likely it's going to be Martinez-Chavez again because the money is so good, unless Chavez gets a lengthy suspension by Nevada, but I'm sure there are ways around that (fight in Mexico? Texas?).
Actually Dawson wanted a catchweight of only 170 and Ward wouldnt do it. Also regardless of how many fans Dawson has its still a big advantage when someone fighst in their hometown. Dont get me wrong Ward is one of my 4 favorite fighters and I think he could beat Dawson at 175 in Jerusalem but Im just speaking the truth. Also Im not so sure Ward will beat Martinez period let alone in Argentina. Yes Ward is bigger but he doesnt hit as hard as Chavez Jr. and the way Martinez moves and boxes I think it would be very tough on Ward. Like I said I wouldnt even predict who would win that fight because I like both of them. As for Cotto I figured he wouldnt mind goin up a bit, just thought he didnt want to go back down and drain himself. I think fighting at like 157 shouldnt be to hard on him so well see. I think its easier to go up then to go down. Got Em!!

I agree he's got to fight out of oakland but I'm not going to fault him if it doesn't wake sense ticket sales wise.

as for dawson, he challenged ward at 168. he also said numerous times prior he wanted to fight the big names at 168. only after ward accepted the fight did dawson ask for a catweight, but dawson accepted and ward is higher p4p so its his right.

I don't like cotto above 154. martinez is a guy who walks around over 180 and imo cotto isn't really a natural junior middleweight. he's a blown up welter. I just think he gives up too much size plus martinez is really bad style for him.

I want cotto vs Canelo assuming cotto beats trout and I want martinez vs ggg. or kid chocolate. or pirog. lots of fantastic fights at 160.

martinez resume at 160 isn't really that great compared to the greats and even previous generations so id like to see him go for a real good run. beating guys at 154 isn't gonna do much for his legacy. but I completely understand he wants money fights so I'm not being critical.

Exclusive: 50 Cent Knocks Out Business Plans With Boxer Manny Pacquiao

'The door will always be open for Floyd to join in,' Pacquiao's adviser exclusively tells MTV News of 50's friend Floyd Mayweather.

NEW YORK — Eight-Division world boxing champion boxer Manny Pacquiao handles his business both inside and outside of the ring. On Wednesday (September 19) Pac-Man was in New York City promoting his December 8 fight with his heated rival Juan Manuel Márquez, but also addressed his in-the-works promotion company with rap mogul 50 Cent.

"I love music, and he likes boxing also," Pacquiao told MTV News about the G-Unit head honcho just minutes before his big press conference at the Edison Ballroom in New York promoting the Márquez match. "We're talking about that and we're discussing. We didn't finalize yet because I'm so busy right now and he's busy right now."

Manny made it clear that he was focused on his December 8 bout with Márquez, a man who he is fighting for the fourth time in his career, but Pacquiao's business adviser Michael Koncz was able to give us much more detail.

Reagrdless he did want a catchweight and Ward wasnt goin for it. Martinez/GGG would be a great fight but theres no money in that fight. It has to be either Cotto or Canelo, or a rematch with weed head haha. Got Em!!

The whole world knows who ducked this fight.
They sure do even Manny fans. Got Em!!

I disagree there is a big buzz around GGG right now and same with martinez. plus keep in mind martinez is going to be out for a bit cuz of injuries so if GGG gets a nice win over Macklin and or Geale that's a big fight in boxing. not as big as cotto but he'll never get cotto.

Of course there is buzz around Martinez but I dont think there is any buzz around GGG though. Maybe another fight in the US against someone good then maybe but for right now its not a big money fight. What about Canelo? That would be a big money fight. Got Em!!

http://content.usatoday.com/communi...ng-TopStories+(Sports+-+Boxing+-+Top+Stories)

Manny says he will take 45-55 split with Mayweather........and so it begins again.
Now he just needs to agree to random drug testing and it should be a go. Got Em!!

Mayweather vs Canelo cinco de mayo weekend 2013 like I've been saying all along. The only other fight I would pay to watch involving Canelo would be vs Cotto. The kid is ready and hungry, he will be the underdog in both fights but he has to take advantage of this golden opportunity now. Going up against cotto and mayweather will make his popularity sky rocket, and if he happens to pull off the upsets he will have done wonders for his legacy at the young age of 22. Not many 22 year old boxers cashing out like Canelo.

LOL @ martinez vs canelo, not the worse fight ever but from a business stand point that fight makes ZERO sense for Canelo. Cotto vs Canelo = Puerto Rico vs Mexico, Canelo vs Mayweahter = The current ppv king vs the future ppv king.

If Floyd is all about money. He knows Canelo is a huge attraction for Mexican fans. Canelos is mexicos superman right now. That fight would sell without a doubt. I would honestly want Floyd vs Canelo instead of Pacquio vs Floyd. Idk why. I just kinda blew over that stage that has been happening for years now for the dream fight. It'll never happen.

Of course Floyd is about money and Manny is still a much bigger fight than Canelo so that doesnt make any sense. I can see him fighting Canelo if him and Manny doesnt come to terms but just sayin its still a much bigger fight. I dont really care who Floyd fights, I just want to see my boy back in the ring soon. He probably only has a year or two left so I want to see all I can. Got Em!!

Doesnt make sense? I think Martinez/Canelo would do bigger numbers than the Chavez Jr./Martinez fight we just had. U have to remember with this Martinez win over Chavez Jr., Martinez is on notice now and has more fans now and all the mexicans would really want Canelo to beat him to get revenge for their fellow mexican Chavez Jr. Got Em!!

BRADLEY-PETERSON II AND GAMBOA-PETERSON IN THE WORKS?
By Ben Thompson | September 21, 2012

WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley is scheduled to make his return to the ring on December 15th, and according to reports, it looks like he just might get a rematch after all. In a recent coversation with Lem Satterfield of RingTV.com, Arum hinted that IBF jr. welterweight champion Lamont Peterson is "one of the names being discussed" for Bradley. While Arum also mentioned former champion Zab Judah as a potential opponent, sources tell us that HBO has already turned him down as Peterson's next opponent (a mandatory title defense), making the chances of them accepting him for Bradley pretty slim. Assuming Arum still has plans to stage Bradley's next fight on the East Coast, you can bet that Peterson is the likely frontrunner to land the assignment.

Sources also tell us that there's a strong possibility that undefeated former featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gambo could be making his return to the ring on that same card, making his lightweight debut against Lamont Peterson's brother, Anthony Peterson. Gamboa is currently signed with 50 Cent, who was recently in California for a private meeting with Manny Pacquiao, Michael Koncz and Bob Arum. Evidently, the rapper turned promoter is working hard to secure TV dates for his fighters, and HBO has expressed interest in a potential Gamboa vs. Peterson matchup. We're told that all parties involved originally discussed the possibility of Gamboa fighting on the upcoming December 8th clash between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez, however, HBO would prefer to feature the bout in a doubleheader on HBO World Championship Boxing

Arum: Chavez Jr. smoked Marijuana because he was having problems sleeping
September 20th, 2012 | Post Comment

Bob Arum julio cesar chavez jr By Dan Ambrose: In the latest boxing news, Bob Arum, the promoter for Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., was quick to defend Chavez Jr. after he was nailed yesterday for testing positive for Marijuana for his fight with Sergio Martinez last Saturday night. Arum doesn’t see Marijuana as a performance enhancing drug that would have given Chavez Jr. an edge in the fight. Arum feels that Marijuana should be legalized. Unfortunately, it’s still illegal and the Nevada State Athletic Commission has rules against fighters using the drug.

Arum told the LA Times “As far as I’m concerned, marijuana should be legal…[Chavez Jr. smoked pot] Three weeks to a month out of breaking camp because he was having trouble sleeping…It was therapeutic use for insomnia.”

Arum is correct. One of the uses for medical marijuana is to treat insomnia. However, you have to get a doctor’s prescription and it’s obviously something that Chavez Jr. needed to advise the Nevada State Athletic Commission before he used using it, even it was a one-time thing. Nevada is one of the states where it’s legal to use medical marijuana, but that doesn’t appear what’s happened here with Chavez Jr. unless he’s able to show the Nevada State Athletic Commission a prescription from a doctor for the use of the marijuana.

Chavez Jr. could end up taking a big hit on his career from this positive marijuana test. Not only will he likely have a big chunk of his $3 million purse for the Martinez fight taken away, but a lengthy suspension is almost a given. The last time that Chavez Jr. was found with a banned substance in his urine was when he tested positive for a Diuretic in 2009 before his fight with Troy Rowland. The suspension was 7 months at that time. You’ve got to figure that Chavez Jr. will receive a lot more than this time with the positive test for marijuana.

This means that boxing fans won’t see a rematch between Chavez Jr. and Martinez for a long time to come, possibly not until 2014 if Chavez Jr. receives a year suspension.

Hopkins: Sergio Martinez’s style is easy to beat
September 20th, 2012 | Post Comment

sergio martinez bernard hopkins By Allan Fox: Bernard Hopkins (52-6-2, 32 KO’s) doesn’t see anything in WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO’s) that he hasn’t seen before in past opponents and he feels Martinez is beatable.

Hopkins said on his twitter “Martinez’s style is very easy to beat. Trust me, Tito [Felix Trinidad], [Kelly] Pavlik, [Antonio] Tarver, he [Martinez] just like them.”

I don’t see Martinez as being anything like Pavlik, Tarver or Trinidad. That’s not really good comparison to be honest. I’m not sure if Hopkins thought this one through before coming up with that comparison, because Martinez is like the opposite of those fighters.

Hopkins should know that the guy that Martinez most fights like is Roy Jones Jr. That’s someone that Martinez seems to have patterned himself after with the way he fights with his hands down and likes to pot shot in the same way that a young Jones Jr. did in the past. Martinez doesn’t have Roy Jones Jr’s lightning hand speed or his quick reflexes that enabled him to get out of the way of big punches in his youth, but he’s still a lot like him with his fighting style.

I’d like to see how Hopkins would do against Martinez if Hopkins were still fighting at 160. It’s not possible to make the fight now, however, because Hopkins fights at 175, and for the fight to happen Martinez would likely have to agree to move up to 168 lbs at least for the two of them to make it happen.

Given that Martinez is small for 160, he’s not going to move up all that weight to take on a guy that will likely rehydrate back up over 180 by fight time. It would be too hard on Martinez because he would likely end up badly out-sized by Hopkins and might mess up his body by moving up in weight.
