Mayweather; Arum Will Have To Pass Haymon, Not King

By Michael Marley

While promoter Don King has been aggressive in courting Floyd Mayweather Jr., the unbeaten boxer is surrounded, at age 33, by the same people who have been in his Inner Circle for several years now and there is no indication, I mean zero signs that he will boot any of them in favor of the 79-year- old, legendary promoter. And that won't change even if Mayweather pops up at ringside at the Pontiac Silverdome on Saturday night for the heavily hyped HBO main event between Devon Alexander and Tim Bradley.

It doesn't require the brain of the proverbial Einstein to see that the Man Behind The Curtain, adviser Al Haymon, remains in charge in the "Money" camp.

The day that Haymon will work harmoniously with King will never come. Either Mayweather annoints King as his new leader or he sticks with Haymon. There's no combo platter option.

The supporting cast also remains the same for Mayweather.

Leonard Ellerbe is still the main guy who goes to court with Mayweather on his domestic violence charges.

When Mayweather went to jail in Las Vegas, white-haired and genial Sam Watson has been there to meet and to greet him.

I assume that Mayweather's bail is always arranged and paid for by Haymon and his acolytes.

The point is, I can't see how King has cracked the lineup, even in the lower part of the batting order.

And, if you know one thing about King, about his wealth and ego and his advanced age, you know that he's not going to link up with Mayweather unless he is the baller and shot-caller.

Mayweather has kept his mouth shut on King's status and the reason is obvious. He's been teasing King during these trips to South Florida and to a recent King promoted card in St. Louis.

He's not ditching Uncle Al for Uncle Don.

If you want to believe otherwise, enjoy your fairy tale, sure.

If Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao can or will be made, either this November or next year, it will be made with Top Rank CEO Bob Arum and company president Todd duBoef mixing it up with Team Haymon.

King doesn't play second fiddle, he doesn't babysit, not at this point in his storied but controversial life.

Although Haymon disains the spotlight, he's a rich cat also and unlikely to bat second behind King, either.

King believes in the credo that former Yankees owner George M. Steinbrenner lived by, that if you're not the lead dog, then the view never changes.

The lead dog in the Mayweather camp was, and remains, Al Haymon.

Any other arrangement is merely wishful thinking.

Pacquiao Was in The Dark on Jump From HBO To Showtime

by Ronnie Nathanielsz

Pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao didn't know about the switch to Showtime from HBO Sports when news of the deal first broke.

In an interview with BoxingScene.com, The Inquirer and ABS-CBN at his congress office earlier this week, Pacquiao was surprised when asked for his reaction on the move to the larger CBS Network organization, which has an audience reach of 115 million homes.

It got to the point where Pacquiao's adviser, Michael Koncz, had to brief him on the switch and basically had to explain the advantages of moving to CBS which owns Showtime and would help enhance his image as a crossover star while also giving his wife Jinkee a chance to appear on CBS shows.

Pacquiao's immediate reaction after the briefing by Koncz was "that's good" noting that HBO Sports had a base of only 26 million.

In a joint official announcement in New York,

Ken Hershman, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Showtime Sports and Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said the Showtime Networks Inc. and CBS have joined forces with Top Rank, Inc. to promote, produce and distribute the biggest boxing event of the year, the showdown between pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao and Shane Mosley at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on May 7.

The agreement effectively brings together Pacquiao, the top athlete and personality in the sport, with SHOWTIME, the fastest growing premium television network in the U.S., and its parent company CBS Corporation whose programming and media assets span network and local television, pay and basic cable, radio, outdoor and online.

The announcement said the campaign will include the SHOWTIME Sports documentary series FIGHT CAMP 360° in preview of Pacquiao vs. Mosley which would replace HBO's 24/7 series. The top rated CBS Television Network will participate by broadcasting a primetime special of the show in April.

Pacquiao who appeared on the top-rated CBS show "60 Minutes" prior to the fight against Antonio Margarito which also featured US President Barack Obama proved to be a hit.

"The arrangement with CBS and Showtime regarding the promotion and distribution of the Pacquiao vs. Mosley championship event represents a new opportunity for the sport of boxing. It enables boxing to reach millions more people in the United States given the reach of CBS, the most watched television network in the country. This development will not only benefit Manny Pacquiao and Shane Mosley but all of the young men participating in the sport of boxing," said Arum.

Hershman said, "We look forward to combining Showtime Sports’ production and distribution expertise with Top Rank's promotional power and the amazing programming and marketing resources available to us across CBS to present the biggest boxing event of 2011."

On May 7, Pacquiao will fight under the SHOWTIME PPV banner for the first time, bringing it the highest profile and biggest revenue generating athlete in boxing whose fights over the past two years have garnered nearly 4 million pay per view buys and unrivaled box office receipts. The event marks the first SHOWTIME PPV event since 2005’s Diego Corrales vs. Jose Luis Castillo II.

“Pay per view has been an opportunistic play for SHOWTIME Sports in recent years,” Hershman continued. “In Pacquiao, we have a global celebrity and unquestionably the most popular boxer of this era attempting to continue his dominance in the ring against Shane Mosley, one of the most talented and recognizable fighters of today not named Manny Pacquiao. With this marquee match up, Pacquiao’s proven track record in pay per view and CBS’s participation, this is the perfect opportunity for Showtime to be back in the pay per view business and in a big way.”

Showtime has a long history of success in pay per view dating back to the 1990s. In 1997, the SHOWTIME PPV presentation of Mike Tyson vs. Evander Holyfield II garnered the most pay per view buys for any sport or entertainment event in history. The 1.99 million buys stood as the industry benchmark for nearly 10 years, until being surpassed in May 2007.

Khan vs McCloskey Falls Apart, Again, at The Late Hour

Paul McCloskey’s promoter Barry Hearn accused Amir Khan of using his fighter to get a cheap World title defence after closing the book on their deal to fight in Manchester.

McCloskey and Khan were in negotiations to fight for Amir’s WBA Light-Welterweight belt at the MEN Arena on April 16 but with both parties failing to agree on terms for the fight, the 31 year-old will now turn his attention to his next fight.

McCloskey’s promoter Barry Hearn believes that Khan’s offer was “totally derisory” to his fighter, after the 24 year-old Bolton man and his people refused to budge on ticket sales commission and pay-per-view revenue shares. Hearn said that McCloskey would be a big ticket seller for the fight and he would also push pay-per-view sales in Northern Ireland and Ireland, but that Khan was unwilling to offer a fair share of money largely driven by McCloskey’s presence.

“Amir Khan lives in America and wants to earn a living popping over here and underpaying British fighters,” said Hearn. “The deals placed on the table were an insult to Paul, an undefeated fighter and a European champion. Amir cannot fight himself, and I’m afraid you have to pay opponents to step in the ring with you, and pay them fairly.”

McCloskey claimed the European belt in November 2009 with a ninth round stoppage of Daniel Rasilla in County Londonderry and defended the title twice last year – an 11th round knockout of Giuseppe Lauri in June in Belfast followed by a seventh round stoppage of Barry Morrison in November in County Donegal.

The Morrison victory took McCloskey’s record to 22-0 with 12 knockouts and he is due to defend his European title soon. Hearn also said that he has a big night planned for the Northern Irishman in Belfast before warning Khan that they could one day fight on an even footing.

“We have a huge fight lined up for Paul at King’s Hall in the spring and who knows, not long down the line he could face Amir as a World Champion himself in a 50-50 split fight,” said Hearn.

Kessler looking to fight Stieglitz in June for WBO title – Boxing News

By Scott Gilfoid: Former WBC super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler (43-2, 32 KO’s) is reportedly looking to face WBO super middleweight champion Robert Stieglitz (39-2, 23 KO’s) in June, as long as Kessler can pass a medical exam for his previously injured eye. Kessler hasn’t fought since schooling Carl Froch last year in April in a Super Six tournament fight. Kessler bowed out of the tournament following that victory due to having injured his eye in losing to American Andre Ward in a one-sided loss in his first fight in the Super Six tournament in 2009.

Kessler should have no problems beating the 29-year-old Stieglitz, because he’s seen as a paper champion and arguably the weakest of the super middleweight champions. Other than the talented Andre Dirrell, Arthur Abraham and James DeGale, the WBO’s contenders are mostly soft challengers and ones that Kessler could beat fighting even with only one eye. Dirrell is still out of action due to suffering an injury in the Super Six tournament. As long as Dirrell’s not around, Kessler should be okay. Froch is itching for another beating, so that’s always an option for Kessler if he wants a nice payday. The rematch would sell well in Germany, as long Kessler could get Froch to go there. My guess is by the time Froch gets destroyed by either Glen Johnson or Andre Ward, Froch won’t be in the position try and dictate where a rematch with Kessler will take place. He’ll have to take what he can get at that point. But first things first. Kessler needs to get Stieglitz out of the way and then move on to bigger and better things.

Judah-Mabuza: Pernell Whitaker Helping Zab in Camp

Pernell "Sweet Pea" Whitaker has joined Zab Judah's training camp to help Zab prepare for his upcoming title fight against Kaizer Mabuza.

Judah was frequently compared to fellow southpaw, Whitaker, who was also promoted by Main Events. Whitaker had this to say: "It's the beginning stages, but I am very impressed. I'm impressed with his work ethic. We're working twice a day. I see the change in Zab, he's changed a lot. I remember how his camps used to be, a lot of people around making noise, hollering and screaming. That doesn't happen anymore. He's much more focused."

"I'm putting Zab in school again and he's learning it all over again. I'm here to teach and I'm not playing around with him. Zab's got all the skills in the world, we just got to bring them out, get rid of all the bad habits."

"We've got a lot of similarities and that's the good part about it. There's always been a lot of me in the kid from the beginning. I'm just here to bring it out. I'm here to bring out the things they said I've done so well and that I know he can do well also."

One southpaw working with another southpaw: "That's a big thing. I don't have to be switching it around. It's natural. It' a match made in heaven for me. It's a blessing to be given the opportunity to work with Zab, to put him back on top, put him back in the position that I think he belongs in and to hold on to it. Almost anybody can get a world title, but can you hold it?"

"To beat Mabuza, Zab just needs to box. Be a boxer, not a fighter or a brawler. A lot of the African fighters are the same way, they just come to fight, and a fighter could never beat a good boxer. Zab's just gotta be smart that's all. He's got all the skills. You can't make that up."

Zab Judah talked about working with Whitaker, "When I was young I was privileged to work with such a great ring technician. Back then I sparred with him and I witnessed his skill. At this point in my career, Pernell isn't just going through the moves with me, he's explaining the techniques, the how and why. I'm listening, I'm learning. You know, it's like putting a hard drive into a computer; you're just downloading all that information, making it all work. Actually, Pernell and I started working together in about 1990. Now we're just polishing up!"

"Pernell is a very talented left-handed person period. It's a different thing working with someone who is 100% left-handed instead of working with someone who switches just for the moment. That person who is 100% left-handed, this is what they do 24 hours a day, so you get the experience from someone who lives it. Some of the moves and things he shows me I can tell that you got to be left handed to pull this off."

"We work out twice a day, morning is the boxing workout and then later in the day we do our conditioning. I'm learning the 'Pernell Whitaker secret' to strengthen my legs, its top secret. I feel great. God gave me speed and power, by learning new defensive and offensive techniques from Pernell we're creating an unstoppable force."

"I say to all my fans, stay tuned on March 5th to see the Zab Judah you love to watch, and to non-believers I say stay tuned and become believers. GODSPEED."

Judah and Whitaker in ring

Judah (40-6, 27 KOs), will take on South Africa's Mabuza (23-6-3, 14 KOs) for the vacant Jr Welterweight crown on March 5th at the Amerihealth Pavilion at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. The fight is being offered on Integrated Sports PPV.

Marcos Maidana: I'll Go To England, Finish Amir Khan Off

By Jhonny Gonzalez

Junior welterweight Marcos Maidana (29-2, 27KOs) has taken a few more stabs at WBA 140-pound champion Amir Khan (24-1, 17KOs) of England. Last month they battled back and forth in a bout that won "Fight of The Year" honors from the Boxing Writers Association of America. Khan won a close twelve round decision. Maidana has made allegations that Khan is a cheap boxer who offers low compensation to his opponents. If Khan makes the right offer, Maidana will travel to England for a rematch.

Khan is slated to return on April 16 in Manchester. No opponent has been set but several possible foes have complained about the money being offered by Khan and his team.

"Amir Khan should be less ambitious and think big. And I would then go to England to finish where I left off with him in Las Vegas. Khan speaks nonsense, as usual. He's selfish and offers crumbs to his opponents. He want to be the only one to make good money," Maidana was quoted to have said by Roger Grenta

Arum says: Pacquiao agreed to be tested up until 14 days of the fight.
Konz says: Pacquiao agreed to be tested up until 7 days of the fight.
Pacquiao says: I agreed to Floyd's demands that I can be tested up until the day of the fight. No cut off date, blood and urine testing unlimited up until the day of the fight. Hey, they can even test me in between rounds.

So when they negotiate to fight, we don't want to hear anything about cut off dates.

And I hope that Floyd doesn't announce an opponent before the Pac-Mosley fight. Floyd has already said, Pacquiao's reluctance to accept the testing terms is the only thing holding the fight back.

Pac should be Floyd's next opponent period.

But we all know Arum (and the games he likes to play), he'll find some other bum for Pacquiao to smash his face in, while blaming Mayweather.

the problem with floyd is he's lumping both negotations into one. When he's talking about 2 weeks, he's talking about the first time. He's denying the second negotations ever occurred, but Ross Greenburg already confirmed they happened with Al Haymon, so that is a big lie by Floyd. He's smarter than that I don't know honestly why he's denying it. To save face I guess.

I really hope he doesn't either tony just a feeling I have. Especially if Alexander wins, Don King has been talking about Devon vs Floyd for months now.

Mormeck vs Rahman in Talks, Far From a Done Deal

By Rick Reeno

Sources close to the negotiations have advised BoxingScene.com that there are ongoing discussions to match former cruiserweight champion Jean-Marc Mormeck (36-4, 22KOs) against former WBC heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman (49-7-2, 40KOs). May 7 is the current working date. The fight is far from a done deal.

The two boxers were being postioned to fight each other last month in Paris. Mormeck's team jumped the gun and officially announced the fight before the contracts were even signed. When it came time to finalize the contracts, the fight fell apart. Rahman was later replaced by Timur Ibragimov, who Mormeck decisioned

Timothy Bradley: I'm Going To Destroy Devon Alexander!

By Mark Vester

WBO junior welterweight champion Timothy Bradley has vowed to put a beating on his WBC rival, Devon Alexander, when they clash on Saturday at the Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan. Bradley thinks Alexander took this fight too early in his career and he should have waited a little longer. He doesn't feel Alexander is seasoned enough.

“In a sense, I still do think it's too early, and you're going to see why Saturday night, when I destroy Devon Alexander. You're going to see why. It's too early for him. He's 23 years old. He's a great fighter. But I'm seasoned. I'm 27 years old. I'm in my prime. It's my time. It's my destiny,” Bradley said. “

Bradley said he took the fight with Alexander because none of the other top names at 140-pounds were willing to face him. He was rejected by Victor Ortiz, Marcos Maidana and Amir Khan.

“I had really nowhere to turn to. I had no other options out there. The boxing fans and the media, everybody was asking for this fight and I was like 'Hey man, we've got to do it. There's no way out. There's nobody else who wants to face us.' Nobody wanted to face me or Devon,” Bradley said.

Amir Khan: 'Bradley vs Alexander, I Can Beat Them Both!'

By Mark Vester

WBA junior welterweight champion Amir Khan has given his opinion on Saturday's 140-pound unification between WBC king Devon Alexander and WBO champion Timothy Bradley. He picks Bradley to win, but he's personally going to root for Alexander. He feels Alexander would present him with less problems in a possible fight.

Khan is going return on April 16 in the UK. Golden Boy Promotions will attempt to match him in July with the Alexander-Bradley winner. Khan likes his chances against either boxer. He says Alexander is the better puncher, but Bradley is the better boxer and more elusive.

"This should be a really exciting fight. It's considered 50-50 as they are unbeaten. Alexander punches harder but Bradley is a better boxer. It will be a tough night for me whoever wins but I can beat both of them. Though I fancy Bradley, I hope it's Alexander. He would present me with less problems. He is slower than Bradley and nowhere near as slippery," Khan told The Sun.

Steward says Khan has “Serious flaws”

By Scott Gilfoid: Legendary trainer Emanuel Steward has noticed some flaws that need major addressing for WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (24-1, 17 KO’s) if he’s to get to the next level and beat top fighters like Victor Ortiz, Devon Alexander, Lucas Matthysse, and Timothy Bradley.

Speaking to the telegraph.co.uk, Steward said that Khan has “Serious flaws” that he’s seen in his style but his fight against Marcos Maidana in December showed that Khan weaknesses that will be exposed when he faces faster fighters with greater boxing skills than Maidana.

Steward is right. Khan is going to be in serious trouble when he faces guys like Alexander and Bradley. If a slow and limited fighter like Maidana was able to have Khan reduced to getting battered against the ropes in the last three rounds of their fight in December, just imagine what a guy like Bradley will do to Khan. It won’t be pretty and there’s not much Khan’s trainer Freddie Roach can do to avoid that from happening.

I’m frankly surprised that Khan is still as vulnerable as he is despite being trained by Roach. However, in all fairness to Roach, there’s only so much you can do with a fighter that has a weak chin like Khan. Roach changed Khan’s style around completely and has turned him into a 100% runner. That – and the referee – saved Khan from getting knocked out against Maidana. If Khan hadn’t ran all night, he wouldn’t stood a chance against Maidana in a one on one fight. Roach can’t do much more than have Khan run.

Pacquiao Showtime: Coming soon to your screen

By Frank Livingstone: The biggest news in boxing for 2011 so far has got nothing to do on what happened or will happen inside the ring but rather outside it. Bob Arum of Top Rank has formally informed Ross Greenburg at a dinner that he is taking the Pacquiao franchise out of HBO to CBS/Showtime. This bombshell has taken the boxing world by surprise. Speculations began to surface that HBO has had enough of Top Rank’s choice of subpar opponents for its top stars including Pacquiao and HBO’s selection of the Martinez/Dzinziruk for its PPV ahead of the Cotto/Mayorga fight was an example.

This may be true but HBO has failed to realized that Bob still has the ace on his sleeve and the winning hand in Manny Pacquiao. It was reported that Top Rank has been talking with Showtime/CBS for sometime for a possible business deal. I’m sure that HBO knew about this rumour but it didn’t heed the warning signs in front of them.

CBS/Showtime will now have the Pacquiao/Mosley fight shown on its PPV. CBS has a market audience of about 115 million compared to HBO’s 28 million. The challenge is how to convert that 115 million to potential PPV sales. Capturing just one percent of the market translates to 1.15 million which was the PPV numbers for the Pacquiao/Margarito fight but this is just the US market. The PPV numbers overseas with CBS support can add even more as Pacquiao is well known overseas. The markets in the Middle East and Japan can be tapped into as their interest of hosting a Pacquiao fight gains momentum.

So in the coming months before the fight in May, the US audience will get to know more about the fight as some exposures would be shown on its top CBS shows. The fight may also get a spot at the upcoming Super Bowl.

The uninformed US audience might be the target of their marketing strategy. Hardcore or casual fans may know Manny Pacquiao as an eight time world champion first and some may also know him as a congressman and humanitarian. But to other sectors of society who don’t know him, they would want to know what the fuss is about and this is the tricky part. CBS might have the rags to riches story, the people’s champion, David/Goliath angle or blood test controversies on its script. But you can rest assured; the Pacquiao Showtime would be coming soon to your screen.
