well right, he's acting desperate for the money fight and risking his health. Making 140 at this point of shanes career is a lil crazy imo. But props to him if he make the weight safely. It's his body, he should know his own limitations.

I just don't want to hear, "shane was weight drained" blah blah blah after Pacquiao TKO's him.

But you know, none of those fights will get him the kind of money that even a 35% split in a Pacquiao fight would. I think at this point in his career, he's trying to capitalize on his big win over the heavily favored Margarito, and get one or two last big paydays before he calls it a day.
I'm with u on that Mosley is a warrior & one of my favorites but he should've learned from Oscar's mistake vs Pac man... Oscar tried to take off too much weight & paid for it. When was the last time Mosley fought at 140 like prolly 12 years ago

Ricky Hatton Will Challenge Amir Khan, Says Roach

By Mark Vester

Trainer Freddie Roach appears confident that Ricky Hatton will come out of his unofficial retirement to challenge his close friend Amir Khan. Roach will be working Khan's corner on Saturday night when he challenges WBA junior welterweight champion Andreas Kotelnik at the MEN Arena in Manchester. Roach says it all depends on how well Khan does against Kotelnik.

“We expect Hatton to come out of the woodwork if Amir has a good fight with Kotelnik and wins convincingly. There are a lot of big fights out there for Amir. Including the likes of Juan Manuel Marquez," Roach told The Daily Telegraph.

Roach plans to have Khan target Kotelnik's body. He says Kotelnik holds a tight defense on top but the body is open.

“Kotelnik is very good at what he does. He has a great defence, he’s a good boxer. But he doesn’t vary his style too much, and is very repetitive. What he does not have is Amir’s speed. I will hold Amir back, and then unleash him when the time is right," Roach said.

“We are definitely going to the body early, Kotelnik protects his face well but not his body. He really hasn’t changed his style that much since his amateur days. He moves in straight lines, so Amir will be going in looking for angles, looking to turn him

Shane Mosley’s Lowball Puts Andre Berto Clash at Risk

BoxingScene.com has learned that a proposed fight between welterweight champions Shane Mosley and Andre Berto is in jeopardy of not happening at all. Various sources advised me that Golden Boy Promotions made an offer of $750,000 for Berto to face Mosley in the fall. Based on that number, Berto would earn less for Mosley than he did for Juan Urango and Luis Collazo.

Two sources advised me that over $3 million dollars is in the mix from HBO alone. Obviously Mosley wants the bulk of the take.

BoxingScene contacted Berto’s promoter Lou DiBella. He refused to discuss specific numbers in the Mosley-Berto negotiations but he did say several options were being discussed for Berto.

Luis Collazo is one of those options for Berto. The problem with a Collazo rematch is the money. I’ve heard HBO offered less for the rematch than was previously paid for the initial fight. Both fighters would earn less for the rematch. Box that in with Collazo’s demand of $900K to promoter Don King - and the fight becomes a difficult one to make. Both sides are still trying.

Selcuk Aydin, Universum’s undefeated amateur standout from Turkey, is another fighter trying to get to Berto. There is a significant amount of money being offered [well above the offer to fight Mosley] for Berto to fight Aydin in Turkey. I’m not sure about Berto’s eagerness to travel to Turkey for a title defense with the possibility of American television not being involved. There are rumors that the Turkish government could get involved to financially persuade Berto to fight Aydin in a soccer stadium. Depending on the amount of financial persuasion, anything is possible.

Oscar was also stupid because he got down to 147 weeks, if not months, before the fight. So instead of doing the logical thing, which is to cut the weight just leading up the fight, then rehydrate back up to your normal weight (probably around 155-160) by fight night, Oscar's dumb ass only rehydrated to 147 or something, only gaining a pound or two.

I'm sure in his mind he did it so people wouldn't say he outweighed pac by so and so pounds, but by doing this he was weak.

Shane would be different I'm sure, shane would lose the extra weight, then probably weigh in around 155 pounds on fight night, wheres Pac would weigh between 140-145.

The cotto fight is even crazier for pac because Cotto typically weighs around 160 pounds on fight night.

Mosley>De La Hoya

Mosley hasn't lost the fighting spirit like De La Hoya has and it will show if this fight ever happens. That is the reason DLH was embarrassed against Pac it wasn't his weight imo.

Gerry Penalosa Sets His Sights on Vic Darchinyan

Rey Danseco

FORMER two-time world champion Gerry Penalosa revealed his next fight has moved a week later against a new possible formidable opponent.

The 36-year old resident of Better Living, Paranaque City, Metro Manila has advised us that his planned Aug. 29 appearance has been postponed to Sept. 4.

The Filipino southpaw assured the fight will definitely be staged in Metro Manila or a nearby province like Antipolo City in Rizal. Araneta Coliseum – venue of ‘Thrila n Manila’ -- is the leading choice as the possible venue.

Penalosa (54-7-2, 36 KOs) said the three boxers in his “hit list”, Jorge “Travieso” Arce (52-5-1, 40 KOs) and Daniel Ponce De Leon (36-2, 31 KOs) of Mexico or Eric Morel (41-2, 21 KOs) of Puerto Rico were all ruled out of the picture.

“They are looking for other opponents, I think they’re afraid,” said Penalosa. “That’s why they are looking for another big name in the business.”

The former World Boxing Council super flyweight and World Boxing Organization bantamweight champion revealed he might fight Vic Darchinyan, who recently failed in his attempt to claim his third world title in different weight division.

"They have offered Darchinyan,” said Penalosa. “We’re waiting for their reply until next week.”

Impresario Rex “Wakee” Salud, a confidant of pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao, confirmed the on-going negotiations between Penalosa’s camp and Darchinyan’s American promoter Gary Shaw of Totowa, New Jersey.

“Arce, Morel and De Leon are not available that’s why Darchinyan has come in the picture,” said Penalosa, who wants to entertain a “world title fight only”.

Darchinyan remains world super flyweight champ despite losing to Joseph Agbeko. But the IBF wants him to fight mandatory challenger Simphiwe Nongqayi of South Africa.

Darchinyan called out WBO super flyweight champion Jose Lopez recently. But Lopez is reportedly signed a deal to fight someone. If that happens, Darchinyan will probably decide who will be be his next foe.

Penalosa stays in his fighting form by regularly working out in his gym in Kalentong, Mandaluyong City. He hits the road every morning in Better Living.

“I keep my weight at 128 pounds, exactly 10 pounds over my fighting weight (bantamweight),” he said.

Penalosa said, he can beat those four boxers should the fight happen in bantamweight.

“As long as the fight is in my division (118 lbs) nobody can beat me, even Darchinyan who I think will give me a good fight although I know I will win by knockout or decision,” said Penalosa

Joe Calzaghe Claims That Khan is "Extremely Chinny"

By Terence Dooley

Joe Calzaghe has expressed his fears over Amir Khan’s ability to take a punch. Calzaghe pens a column for campaignseries.co.uk and used it as a platform to express his concern for Khan, who fights WBA light-welterweight champion Andreas Kotelnik later tonight.

"Khan holds the stylistic advantages," wrote Calzaghe. "But there is one worry…we all know that Khan’s weakness is his chin and hopefully that won’t be exposed. He is extremely ‘chinny’ we all know that and he will have to be wary because Kotelnik might be a little sluggish, but he does have power."

However, Joe’s fears over Khan’s vulnerabilities are wiped away by his belief that Khan’s speed, athleticism, and power will prevail, and bring the UK a ray of hope in these troubled times.

Khan weighed 9st 13 1/4lbs at today’s weigh in. Kotelnik had to strip off, but made the 10st limit without any worries.

James Kirkland Pleads Guilty, To Be Sentenced on 9/23

by David P. Greisman

James Kirkland pleaded guilty last week to a charge of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm, according to court documents.

The documents are available online via the federal court PACER service. This story was first reported by Scott Shaffer of BoxingTalk.com.

Kirkland’s sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 23.

Kirkland was on probation for a 2003 armed robbery. In April, he was seen giving his girlfriend money to buy ammunition at a gun show in Texas. Police pulled him over later and discovered a loaded pistol in his vehicle.

Kirkland’s probation officer apparently was already going to revoke Kirkland’s probation for another incident in which he allegedly threw a pistol under a vehicle, according to a report at the time in the Austin American-Statesman.

The 25-year-old junior-middleweight prospect had taken the sport by storm, going undefeated through 25 fights, knocking out all but three of his opponents and being prominently featured on HBO and Showtime. But his arrest and incarceration led to him being pulled from an undercard bout on May’s Ricky Hatton-Manny Pacquiao pay-per-view and from a proposed challenge of 154-pound titlist Sergiy Dzinziruk.

Lebedev Ends Maccarinelli's Career With Brutal Beating

Mark Vester

At the MEN Arena in Manchester, Denis Lebedev (18-0, 13 KOs) battered former WBO cruiserweight champion Enzo Maccarinelli (29-4, 22 KOs) over three rounds to force a stoppage. Prior to the contest, Macca promised to retire if he lost the bout. It was the third knockout loss for Macca in his last four fights.

After being outclassed for the most of the three rounds, an vicious uppercut in the third had Macca in trouble, and forced referee Terry O'Connor to jump in as Lebedev battered him against the ropes with multiple combinations.

"It looks like it [retirement], I'm just devastated," said Maccarinelli. "I don't think I've got it any more

Amir Khan Decisions Andreas Kotelnik, Wins WBA Strap

By Mark Vester

At the MEN Arena in Manchester, UK star Amir Khan (21-1, 16KOs) moved up in weight to capture the WBA junior welterweight title win a twelve round unanimous decision over Andreas Kotelnik (31-3-1, 13KOs). The scores were 120-108, 118-111 and 118-111.

Khan was getting his punches off in the first by using his quick hands to box Kotelnik with his jab and combinations, then move away before the counters came in his direction. Khan also dug plenty of hooks to the body. Khan continued to use his faster hands and movement to cause a lot of problems for Kotelnik. Kotelnik let some combinations go at the start of the third, with Khan coming back with some combinations of his own. Khan was still able to outbox Kotelnik with quicker punches as the fighters came into the fourth, where Kotelnik was starting to pick up the pace and blocking a lot of shots.

Kotelnik began to walk Khan down in the fifth. He was landing well and blocking most of Khan's counter combinations. Khan was unable to land much to Kotelnik's head. He was able to land some hooks to the body. Khan started pumping the jab at the start of the sixth. He was pushing Kotelnik back with multiple combinations. Most of the punches were blocked but the force was still able to move Kotelnik. By the midway point, Khan had thrown more than double of what Kotelnik pumped out.

Khan opened up the seventh with some hard right hands. Kotelnik made a mistake by following Khan around and taking some big shots to the body as he tried to come inside. Kotelnik continued to follow Khan around in the eight. Khan was landing well when Kotelnik came in, but the champion was landing some good hooks to the head and body. Kotelnik was still pressing forward in the ninth, Khan kept him at bay with the jab and body punches.

Kotelnik appeared to be very frustrated in the tenth. He chased Khan around the ring and took some shots. Kotelnik made Khan stand and fight at times but his hands were too slow to land the big counters. Khan's suspect chin was able to stand strong when Kotelnik caught him with a hard right hand in the eleventh. Kotelnik really let his hands go in the eleventh but Khan was able to cover up well and threw some decent counters in return.

As the two entered the ring for the twelfth and final round, Kotelnik appeared to be fresher. Kotelnik knew he was behind on the cards. He was charging forward and throwing power punches from both hands to score a knockout. Khan stood his ground at times to throw some counter combinations. Khan appeared to coast as he knew Kotelnik was far behind on points and looking for the knockout

^ Yeah, I was actually surprised at how accurate he looked. I wasn't sure if he would be able to land as much as he did, but maybe it was youth prevailing over experience.

His chin is definitely still suspect though, and I think at 140 its even more of a liability.

Hats off to Roach though, this is as good as Khan has looked, IMO.

Kelly Pavlik-Paul Williams Offer Denied, Says Goossen

By Mark Vester

A few weeks back, promoters Dan Goossen and Bob Arum of Top Rank held discussions on a possible middleweight bout between WBO/WBC champion Kelly Pavlik and multi-division contender Paul Williams.

"About three weeks ago, two weeks ago, I had discussions with Bob Arum regarding a possible Pavlik-Paul Williams fight. Now as we know, Paul Williams has fought at 160-pounds but he's actually a 147-pounder," Goossen said to BoxingScene.com's Thomas Schlabe.

Goossen tells BoxingScene that he pitched an even 50-50 deal and Arum wanted no part of the deal. Based on their recent runs in the ring, Goossen believes that both sides are entitled to an even split.

"Coming off that great win over Winky Wright, obviously Kelly is still reeling somewhat from the loss to Bernard Hopkins. Regardless of that, we feel that Paul is at the top of the divisions whether it's 147, 154, 160 or 168," Goossen said.

"I told Bob that I wasn't going to get into a situation where I thought, that based on Paul's recent win over Wright and Pavlik's recent loss to Hopkins - I wasn't going to sit there and put Pavlik at a smaller percentage. I told him that we would be willing to do the fight at 50-50, co-promotion and each side split it down the middle and Bob didn't want any part of it."

Top Rank recently spoke with HBO and three middleweight opponents are being looked at for Pavlik's return on October 3 at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City - Winky Wright, Sergio Martinez and Felix Sturm
